Thread: Why won't people take free food? Tips & comments for chefs...
I do not wanna grind for hours. I did that with tailoring and it sucked...and I dropped tailor. Plus chef's super gimp'd right now, so I don't wanna grind 12 hours and then have SOE 'fix' the chef (fix=fubar).
So, I've been making charde, wastril bread, and meatlump in the Theed cantina. Once I have maybe 7 meals (stacks of 2 chard and 2 meatlump OR wastril) I announce the kitchen is open...that all food is on the house, but tips are most appreciated.
Then I spend 30-60 mins finding 7 people who will take my food and scarf it down. I usually send them a tell begging them to eat both stacks so I can get the UXP. I know Uxp isn't much, but I'm trying to roleplay this out, AND make at least a little chef progress while I'm at it.
To complicate things, it seems people can't feed my food to their pet??? Is this a new bug? Can creatures only eat food, and not anything meant to be drank?
I wish I knew where everyone was at on Gorath. I did manage to get 2 1,000 credit tips for my food yesterday, so I can afford to travel to a more densely populated region/planet...if I knew where to go. While I cook/sell, my assistant gets the resources I need out in the field.
If you have tips on 'selling' to customers please share them. If you're on Gorath, let me know the laggiest part of the galaxy...cuz there be all the people!
I have one use for food: I need to eat it sometimes to restore my stats, which seem to get stuck during wound healing sometimes.
I get all the food I need for this from NPC's. Bread, melons, meat.
The duration and extent of chef buffs simply isn't worth wasting the inventory space to carry all that food. My inventory space is a valuable commodity.
When you can give me a single stack of 50 food, each of which gives me +200 willpower for 30 minutes, call me.
When sony calls us we will call you.
Here are a few tips for getting going, Don't just be a chef, it's imposible ATM to make a living at it, earn your money by being a combat player and such.
Make food that is good for dancers (Action, quickness and staminaBuffs) and give them away to the dancers. Set up a macro telling them why there good for em and spam it in cantinas.
When you have the dancers hooked on free food and drink try to be their most nights to give them food and drink.
Also match food to professions. Rubie is good for doctors as is charde take a look at my cantina menu below to see what is good for what type of player.
Lastly be patiant, chef is bork atm, hopefully it wil improve with time and in the mean time don't try to spend your day as a chef, treat it as a hoby.
Have fun doing other things, its the only way.![]()

So yes, I've chosen 3 of the more 'broken' professions..not realizing in the beginning that they were broken (of course DE was fine til they gimp'd probots and added perma-death).
Since I still have medic skills, the best way for me to earn cash is in the med center...but last time I did that it was hell finding anyone who would tip me for the healing I provided. Then people call me a jerk for saying "sorry but I only heal when pre-paid".
I always pay my medics when I play my alt. char, or tip them with a decent stack of meat.
The point is, this character is NOT a combat type...and I'm left with few means to earn money.
And to the guy that said my food's not worth the space in his inventory...I'm only giving away 1 stack of charde and 1 stack of wastril bread...just enough to fill you up so I can get the Uxp, and your inventory isn't lost.
It's these players with a 'higher than thou' attitude towards ME that is ruining this game. And SOE's solution lately is to make everything more difficult and force people to group up to survive in combat, and also to for trade alliances with other merchants...many of whom are self sufficient, or already in a PA and thus scoff at my attempts to 'make a deal'.
This is why yesterday both my accounts were AFK macroing in the cantina for dancing or music exp, while I sat in the other room playing Knights of the Old Republic on the Xbox. Can you say "duel wielded lightsabers OWN"? hehehe
Here is how I do things. First here is my proffession. I am a master entertainer, novice dancer, novice musician, novice chef, and have up to business 3. Later I will be droppingthe dance routine in order to get a tree or two in the merchant tree. My character has 300 health / con / str. I do not last in a fight at all (though I've only died once, and that was when I was afk sampling ![]()
Delivery missions are you friend.
I operate out of Mos Espa and Mos Eisly. I tend not to stay in a town for no longer than an hour or two playing at the cantina, bartending (Starshine suprise and Jawa Beer sell decently). I post 5 things of Caf, Starshine, and Teitler noodles on the bazaar. Yes, I know this won't earn you chef xp, but it will earn you two things. Credits and a client base. After each sale either in person or on the bazaar I add the person to my mailing list and send them my menu and waypoint for my Resturant. I also have a mail I send out to scouts detailing my policy on buying quality organics at a price baised on quality of the resource, not quantity. (but give bonus money for having both q's). After I have played my geetar enough in one cantina or too many bar fights break out, I grab 2 delivery missions for 700c each and head over to the other town. Occasianlly I drop into bestine, but usually thats on a business call like a bazaar purchase.
Currently I need to raise 8k a day to support my harvesters and solar generator. I make 3-6k just from selling extra metal and water. I'm sure if I put my metal on ore I could make that 8k just by selling all my ore to an architech in need.
Also I have menus that I've saved as e-mails that are easy to read and have one for food and drink. Each has a waypoint to my vendor and details my policy on ordering buffs in advance and special discouts for bulk buys. When I'm doing delivery missions I will hit my spam button twice - once near hospital and once near the cantina/shuttle port to advertise my menu's. I get at least 5-6 tells a day. I also ask these people if they would like to be on my mailing list. About half of them agree to it.
I send out a mail a week to all on the mailing list. If they reply they don't want on it then I take them off. I'm sure most don't read it or take action on it, but its all about getting the word out that you're there to help their character do well. I have a few frequent buyers on my domestic foods which is ok. I'd rather be using the resources to make good chef buffs, but until my florals get me lots of wheat and organics it will be a few days. I'm sure once I get Tat Sunburn I won't have many problems getting money, but it is rough in the begining I agree.
Good luck not grinding. I tried that for the first 3 boxes in domestics. 2 weeks had gone by and I wasn't getting anywhere fast so I just turned on the practice button and haven't really looked back ![]()
You know? I've actually had more success selling food on my vendor than trying to get entertainers in the Cantina to take free food.
I advertise that I'm passing out "entertainer friendly food" (ithorian mists and stewed gwouch) and that it's on the house. I then describe the effects of the food and the benefit it does to me for them to be eating it (UXP). One would think that entertainers would sympathize with my plight. Much to my chagrin, I found that more than half of the entertainers were AFK. Lol.
I've slowly started to built up a cliental - my most popular item right nowis my stewed gwouch (gotta love it that it's a valid grind as well) that players pick up for some quick pet food. I sell by the charge rather than by resource costs and that's gone over pretty well so far. At 25cr a charge, I'm making enough to keep my chef harvesters going and there's the added benefit that I occassionally get UXP. As my experimentation goes up, I'll be able to get more servers from the same resources and I can garner a greater profit. Seems fair to me. When factories start working again, I'll be able to produce more efficiently and make a little bit more cash.
The house vendor list rights have been fixed. Try asking some of the more successful craftsmen whether they would mind if you placed a vendor in their shop. My personal shop does a slow, but steady repeat business. Thenew vendor that I placed in our PA's superstore is putting it to shame - all the foot traffic has resulted in a weekend take in of about 7k credits. Not bad for random chef grind.
