I got some basic biological components (aka tissues) for free from BE, and while the bc do have an effect shown on them, when I make my sub components, it always says "health 0, strength 0, ..." or "duration 0".
Am I doing something wrong ? Or am I expecting too much from unexperimented novice BE stuff ? Or is it just another known feature ?

If by 'another known feature' you mean 'is this another broken Chef/Bio Eng. issue'...then yes.
Apparently all Bio Eng. components for chefs AND tailors either don't give the food a proper boost, or in the case of clothing, the + to skill modifier isn't actually giving the bonus (which sucks because when purchasing the item, you SEE the bonus and are 'tricked' into buyin it).
At least you got them for free. The bio eng. also got usage exp from you using the components. I'm a BE/chef but I no longer get usage exp from my own components. I think that is pretty lame. We should get Uxp from eating our own food too, but we don't. I don't know why...because you can't really eat enough food for it to have a significant impact on your leveling up the skill tree.
sigh...

I have tested the duration supplement from a BE friend, and it DID work. it was a 2% supplement, and the finished product (meatlump) did, indeed, have a 2% greater duration (5 seconds)

You need a good chef and a great (read: master) BE to do anything signifigant with the component. At straight novice I actually made my food worse using a novice BE component.
