Just hit novice smuggler (seems to compliment chef in many aspects), and the first thing I made was Grey Gabaki.

Novice item, +500focus 500s - a NOVICE item that beats almost everything a Master chef can make

Kind of puts into perspective how shafted we are - and add to that experimentation is about to start working on spices so they will get even better O_O.

That's funny. A lot of smugglers think they can't sell their spices (the market is rough right now in many places, lemme tell ya) because chef and doctor buffs don't have the downer effects and people are afraid of those downer effects. So considering both sides think the other has the one-up on them, I'm guessing it's just about right.

ps. and if you think the gabaki is strong, wait'll you see the muon and neutron pixie

Yeah I had a customer come into my store who had been using spice, and he said he's leaving it behind, because he didn't like the downer effects.

Actually, from that link you sent, I found this part just as depressing:

Additionally, Spices is the easiest and fastest tree to raise. If you work only Shadowpaw then Thruster Head, it won't take more than a day, with the final box not taking more than a half hour if you have the components to grind out 115 Thruster Head.

I was more depressed at the fact that a novice item beats most of the entire chef line

I think Spices are pitched just right, with the length, buff and then the downer, its just food & drink that's out of whack

I've already read the full spices tree as Im going master chef & smuggler, so I know what's coming
Im kinda hoping that by the time I hit Master Smuggler, chef will be partially fixed

Ugg, I never even realized spice had durations of 600+ seconds.

Pretty sad considering that the site above (smugglers den) was done by my PA leader.
