Thread: A personal request to Chefs and SirVimes

Hey guys I wanted to ask this of SirVimes, I know I could have sent him a private message but I also wanted your opinion on the subject.

Harvestors: I run my own harvestors and manage my own resources. But I would like a better way of doing this and saving me some time and energy. Instead of roaming around and checking all my harvestors because of the fuzzy math they tend to use.

Here is what I propose.

In the datapadthe devolpers create another group just for people who run harvestors. What they can do here is add the icon for each Harvestor, Factory or House they place. When you click on these icons you will recevie data on each one. This will look something like your pet data when you have it in your inventory and show status, I wrote something like this in the Disscussion forum only to land on some def ears between nerf the pets and commandos. This is what I would basicly like it to say:

(Harvestor Name or Type)
Maintance: amount/timeleft
Power:amount/timeleft
Operation: On/Off
Schematic(for Factories)
Items produced(again for Factories)
Resource

Now this would help us buy just looking at it we can see what is going on with all our harvestors at just a glance instead of going all over the place to check them one by one. Now we dont need to know any specific dates or times of resource shift for the simple way to check if the resource shifted would be to check the operation of the item (either on or off) if it is off then you know something has changed and it is time too check out your item. You would not be able to change anything from this point of view just observe and check status.

That is my Idea, I personaly think its a good one. If you guys wana add to it that is why I posted here soo I can get some opinions on this and maybe we can pass it along. Of what I hear the devolpers will be taking the correspondents ideas and trying to make them happen. They will no longer hear the General public and have a SWG Disscusion forum soo all our Ideas will have to be filtered through SirVimes at the moment Before he goes.

Thanks for you time guys

An excellent idea, though I must say it was discussed once before I believe. I think in the original thread, this would be found either via a new tool [harvester control device or something like that] or viaa new speceis of droid. But hey! Bringing the subject up may grab the eye of Dev where it did not grab before!

During beta I really pushed for something like this. I was told (many times) that there was a problem that your harvesters do not actually exist. They are created when you aproach them and they do all the math then with how many resources are there and such.

Why this math can't be done locally, I don't know...I will ask again.

Vimes I belive what they told you but something I dont understand is that if the world is preloaded then all the harvestors must be also. What happens whena resource shifts does it record the shift and - the amount of resources in the hopper when you approch. Or maybe at that time in beta this was not a fesable idea because of the current bugs and publishes that needed to be released at the time.

Now everything is out in the open and I am sure you could get this pushed but dont push alone get every other correspondent to help with this push. If you have the backing off all the crafters and most of the fighters that is 80% of the game wanting this addition to happen that is a huge amount of ammo for something to be done for people who spend most of there time harvesting instead of accualy enjoying the game. Which is what is the Developers want us to do.

Best thing to do Vimes(not that I am telling you but just something that can help you alot in your arguement) take a example of someone doing harvestor runs for Doctor. 5 planets. 10 minutes each wait both ways worst case scenario 100 minutes wasted on intellegence or harvesting with this plan it would be reduced to about 30 minutes tops, Because the person running the harvestors knows what he needs and the amount he needs, and can spend the saved time on accualy enjoying the game instead of resenting the game.

Something I just wanted to say. I hate not knowing when the supplies will run out or change and wasting my time checking every day. If you need support let me know I am part of a crafting PA and If you need any back up we will be right there to make sure you dont do it alone. Expecially the guys in here .

Don't forget dont bring this up with out telling the other correspondents their support will help them figure something out. Remember all your charged with is bringing the idea. You brought it, the answer it cant be done is for people with out hope.

I still have hope in you and the system working Vimes.

The world is notpreloaded. The artwork is preloaded, and then your computer uses the art as you move. The terrain is created as you move using mathamatical equations the machines do quickly to create the mesh and then just stick the art on it. As far as your computer is concerned, there is no world outside a certain radius (64 meters?) and just creates it as you approach.

I will push for this...see if I can get others too. But this is the answer i keep getting. (ANd it was after beta too)

Perhaps a alternate way of looking at it?

The problem is the Harvesters only exist in the world when a player is close enough to their location, so a literal report of the harvesters state is difficult.

However, if you ignore shifts, a local datapad that, based on a sync with the last known state of a harvester (Power, Maint, hopper contents) *estimated* current Power, maint and contents - this is all stuff I can do manually anyway, so this would just be an aid.

The other thing, resource shifts are a global (per planet) state so are knowable anywhere on that planet. (Cheap check is with the survey tools for that anyway..)

The way it works is this :

Harvesters, factories, houses - all structures are not loaded until someone is nearby. This helps to reduce memory use on the server. It is also why sometimes, after a server restart, structures can tak3 30mins to "pop" - because everyone just logged in at once, and the server cant fill all the requests at once.

Once someone gets close, the server loads the structure and runs calculations to work out things like :
what it should have harvested in the time
how much power it should have used
how much maintenance it should have used
how many items should be made

etc etc

The problem they have, is that it currently requires a player to physically approach a structure to trigger this, this is how they coded it all to save memory/cpu, and it isn't easy to get around.

I would love a remote administration/monitoring tool for my harvies. Hell - simply making structure waypoints undeleteable until they are removed or destroyed would help
The number of times Ive deleted a harvester wp without realising, and then only reemembered it existed when I got the 50% condition spam....

This sounds like a great idea. It would make things a lot easier, but I think there are other issues in game that are important to get fixed first.

An alternative to this would be like the current factory system...harvs could send us an email when they shut off like factories do now. (obviously this would be if the first ideacouldnt be done)

I like the idea and remember it being suggested in beta by several different professions...its a good idea.

I like the idea of harvesters sending mail...makes a lot of sense too. I would love it if all structures sent mail once a week, and then when running out of money and power (or when a resource shifts)...and send that email to ALL admins on the structure. Drives me crazy trying to track my factories when 4 were planted by my roommates character.

This site has a great lot management tool. Its opened in excel and can keep track of all your harvesters/houses/and i think factories. All sizes, you can customize all the values to match your harvester. gives you a warning when you have less then 24 hours on a running harvester. Lets you know how much resource you will get out of the harvester. You can put how much of it you expect to sell and at what CPU to find out how much money you will be making. Includes Redeed cost. Oh and vendors too. available in 10, 25, 50, and 100 Lot versions. Sure it wont tell you when your resource shifts but It is definately worth its money !!Free!! Hell Its awsome. Props out to its creator

I use that lot management tool as well, it's excellent, though to get started it usually requires a run to each item you have to check its exact stats as of that moment.

It also works on freeware versions of Excel, if it didn't come with your computer and you're not into paying $300 for Office, or whatever they're charging for it now.
