Thread: Please help me understand: Why the grind?

I understand the XP-for-skills system. It's standard, it's expected. But WHY is the XP required for levels, especially the Chef (don't know about the other crafting professions) so insanely high?

Some of you will tell me "I made master chef after only 4 days of grinding." Well, I don't want to grind nonstop for 12 hours a day for 4 days. That's not fun for me. I can't imagine it was all that fun for you either.

I understand making the XP requirements such that you don't end up with everybody mastering a profession quickly or easily, but the XP requirements just seem unfun. They wouldn't be so bad if there was a FUN way of getting the XP, but the crafters rate of XP gain is limited by his skill. As a novice chef, my best bet is to make Wastril bread. Well, it's not fun (or entirely profitable) to ONLY make Wastril bread. A combat character can at least choose to engage more difficult enemies, but the novice chef can't choose to make a more difficult dish.

Woudn't it make more sense if you got more XP from crafting superior items? This would give more incentive to making quality over quantity. I don't mean crafting higher-level items, I mean getting better XP for crafting any given item with better qualities. Shouldn't the XP given be proportional to the quality you squeeze out of it? If real life paralleled this game, the guy who flips burgers at McDonald's would reach Master Chef faster than the guy who creates delicate soufles at a fine French restaurant.

You can get more XP per item at higher levels, it's simply that stuff like gwouch use only 2 resource types, so can be made cheap & fast.

What did annoy me is that smugglers get 4xp per resource on the spice line, can level it faster than we can level chef lines (20k xp for spices IV vs 70k for entrees IV) yet overall, produce superior items :/
