Thread: I refuse to charge that much for food

Hi Everyone,

The chef profession is quite new to me but I liked cooking all those foods. Now, in the new patch, I'm gonna stop making foods with nanonutrients; The reason for this is (without attacking the prices charged by the bio-engineers) that the food prices are too high. My example: I sold the new patch Breath of heaven, 1k for 3 drinks (the 3 statts +500 for 8 min). Now I have to buy an extra heavy nanonutrient for bout 2-3k and my breath of heaven will come out only 1 drink with all 3 statts +1000 for 9min. And then the problem occurs: I have to charge at least 3,5k for 1 breath of heaven and that is just too much for food. This is of course only one example.

But with a little matheven I can see that the price is bout10 times as high as the one without the nanonutrient; would you pay that price for double statts? Am I just selling too cheap? Am I doing something wrong crafting the stuff(or is it bugged)?or is this normal these days to charge these prices?

There are many valid ways to do business, hope you'll find one that suits you.

One problem to your argument, and its what I had to seriously think about when selling stuff. Another chef or any other player will buy your stuff low and sell it again for whats its going for. Not a big deal if you dont care, but some do. I went a little half way. Current price for BE brandy on my server is from 300k-400k, but much closer to 300k. I sold at 250k. Lower yes, but I kept my long term customers happy who actually use it themselves. Anyways, good luck and think of all aspects before pricing.

PSKstang hit it right on the dot. I had people buying crates of my SMALL GLASSES vasarian for 120K and reselling it for 12K per STACK. So they made a larger profit on the crate than I did and they didn't have to do a thing except spam at the spaceport.

BTW, too much for food? You're joking right? With the Vasarian andDoc Buffs(which I and many other combat veteransgladly pay 10K for)I can wear Full Armor and VibroKnucklers and SPAM my TKA special attacks on anything in sight with my combat account. Why is this important? Well, I can do 10K missions even faster if I so desired. For what my food costs, someone could make it back using only 4 doses of one stack to afford an entire crate.

The adjustment to the Chefs actually having worthy products for prices that are being seen, is just well overdue. But the process to get them these foods is endless.

Please take no offense but isn't that what your customers would be decideing? If I come to your shop and see 1k for a stack I might think that is way to high. Maybe 333c/charge is too much for me. Hence I don't buy it.

Someone else comes to your store and sees the 500 buff and thinks it is too low. They don't care at all on the price.

I completely agree that the price might be too high. However this is only 1 example. You also only included one example of the BoH. 3k for a heavy tissue is accurate. What about 1k for a light and then you sell a 750ish buff for 1.5k.

I'm not telling you what to do, but you looked at only the extreme there. There are going to be foods that aren't good for additives. Is a novice artison food that takes 5 flora to make ever going to made with an additive?

+50 buff for 100c a stack or +75 buff for 1100c/stack. In the real world it isn't up to the merchant to decide if something is good or not based on what their opinion of the product is. They look to the customers to see what the customers want. I will never use a +dodge food because I am not a fencer or pistoleer, but that doesn't mean I won't sell it.

I know you feel, really. I have just been agonizing over how to price this stuff.

What I had to do was think about how much longer and stronger the buffs are now, how much more factory time (and hence money) are needed to make all the different components, the price of buying components from others, and taking into consideration what others were willing to pay.

I've struck a price that is balanced between the cost of resources and what the going rate is now. So like PKStang's server, it's running 300-350k for a crate of teh Ubar Brandy (in fact a customer told me last night she paid 525k for one!) but I am selling for 250k.

That way I am still giving my customers a great deal while still getting paid well for the work I'm putting in.

Basically it all comes down to finding a pricing system you can live with. If it's too little you will be sold out with a huge waiting list. If it's too much it won't sell. There's a lot of range in between

Good luck

Haala,

I am an exact agreement. I spent probably more time then i should in pricing Brandy and Canape with additives. At most i was at 325k a crate due to BE costs, but since that has kind of relaxed i have brought my prices down to something along that line.

The fact that some chefs, not all, dont have reallyany idea or realization on how to coordinate costs is whats disturbing, not only is by the ones that generate outrageous prices like the 525K you heard of, but its a 100-150k thats just as desturbing. Yes your making it more affordable, yes your not seeming greedy, but tell that to a Armorsmith, Weaponsmith or Architect that he is being greedy with his prices. Its just new to everyone that we actually can make something exceptional.

So for those paying outrageous prices and to those undercutting the market to make a sale. I salute you, minus 4 fingers from the usual.

This is the best thing I like about the revamp. Everything just isn't handed to everyone and told do this. Almost every food has 2-3 choices in it and almost all of them have their uses.

worry about your own profit margin.... i'e been selling spice for a while, and cheaply at that. but i'm still within my desired profit margin. I encourage people to resell my crates of moun gold at server standards, cuz then i'm still getting my 50% profit, and i'm having devoted customers that only desire my spice.

of course once i've started chef i've realized that it is a lot harder than spices, so I'm going to go with a higher profit margin than 50% because of work involved. 1 run to a factory is a lot easier than 3-4 runs.

so, grind out all your numbers and find out exactly how much it costs YOU and not what other people are selling it for. and buy an economics book if you have any further problems

Your bio-engineer is severely overcharging you for the additives. Lets look at a few things here and how I'd charge for them if I was still actively selling bio-eng stuff on Ahazi...

Hyper Yeast Additive - this needs wild meat which is hard to find with decent stats so it's a little more, however I'd sell this for around 400c per item at the most.

Micronutrient supplement - fairly easy to find resources, this would be only 150c.

Intelligent Nanonutrients - this was the one you mention, needs domestic meat and wild meat which can be a real pain to get with any kind of decent stats so this would be around 615c from me.

Like it said, your supplier is really screwing you over cause theres no way these things are worth those amounts of money each.

LOL Creedon now that's a rant I can live with. Someone who's not just flaming to flame.

To the original poster. As a consumer myself(not a BE or Chef) I like to be able to make those decisions based on what resources I currently have available at my disposal. Personally I have the Cash at the moment and would much prefer spending a much larger amount of money on a much more useful product(BE enhanced/Casked). But you will also get those who simply dont' have the money for the high end foods and for them there are other foods avialable. Charge what you feel you need to charge in order to make it worthwhile to you to continue making your product. If your consumers feel that it is too much then they will let you know by not buying your product. If you are underselling yourself then they will also let you know that by lining up at your factories waiting for you to pull your product out.

There is a huge range of potential benefits and costs to various foods. It's always nice to have a choice between the uber high end products if you can afford them and the economy version. Doc's do this regularly and certain docs will use economy buffs that hit much lower than your elite docs the prices varying usually from about 6k-15k. And often a doc will choose one side or the other but they dont' normally carry both. It's a little easier for you to work both ends of the Chef profession if you are intersted in it or like the Docs you can simply choose a position and fill it. There is a need for both economy products and high end products and you can choose to fill one or the other or both.

I have at this point custom ordered several crates of foods from a local Chef(BE enhanced and casked) and was more than happy to pay the premium in order to get exactly what I wanted. There are many others out there like me and there are also the opposites. It's all up to you and what helps you have fun while in the game. Don't do anything you don't want to. If you dont' like the idea of selling crates of food for 200k+ then by all means dont' worry about it, others will fill in that niche and you can work on the areas you feel more comfortable working on.
