Hey Chefs! I posted this over on the general boards this morning, but it was quickly burried by people looking for the devs to nerf this, nerf that, blah blah blah. Anyways, let me know what you thing. If you feel strongly about it, the thread on general is at:

http://forums.station.sony.com/swg/board/message?board.id=Development&message.id=504644

I'm neither chef nor smuggler, but I had a bit of an ipifiny tonight. It has to do with the fact that smugglers feel that many foods infringe on their spice market, and the fact that chefs and smugglers in general have trouble competing moneywise with the armorsmiths, and especially weaponsmiths.

Why not make food a semi-requirement for productive, healthy functioning in SWG? Ok, ok, before you shoot this down, hear me out. You can't make food a requirement or your character dies or something, that'd just be too harsh. But, you could make a hungry or thirsty character less functionable than someone who is well nurished. Maybe accuracy drops for ranged combat players, speed drops in melee, efficiency drops for crafters (can't focus when you're hungry, right? I know I can't),and dancing/music playingslows for entertainers. These functions would drop only to a certain point. We don't want Joe Bob going away on vacation and coming back to a character that is non-functional. Also the time which a food/drink stays with you would have to be drastically extended. Right now the effects last what...? 10 minutes on the good stuff I believe? (Feel free to correct). Also another fail safe is that cantinas would have to slowly decrease hunger/thirst, much like med centers and cantinas slowly heal wounds now. Wouldn't want someone with no cash having to resort to begging.

With that said, there could be a use for chefs other than providing stats that smuggler's spices should be doing. Thus making the spice trade an active market. Things with outrageous stat boosts such as tatooine sunburn would be a spice, with repercussions (sp?), instead of the easily taken food it is now.

What I'm going for, and what originally had me planning this out, is I think spice should be sort of a "turbo" button. Many elite chef foods tread over what I feel should be spice territory. However, you can't just take away the chef's elite stuff, it would make them worthless (although SOE's good at that, lol). The above effects to a hungry or thirsty character puts them back into the market, doing what they should be doing, feeding hungry adventurers, not buffing them for battle.

"Hey Bob, we're headed into battle tomorrow, got anymore of that spaghetti?"

"No Joe, we're fresh out"

"**edit**, looks like I'll only be able to take 2 stab wounds now, instead of 5"

In the end, I think this would help both professions. Smugglers will have their "turbo buffs" market freed, and Chefs will have a much more stable business. But even more important, both will have more purpose. And its nice to know you're being helpful, right? I mean, cash gets thrown around all over the place, but having a purpose is what makes it worthwhile.

Ok, looking for opinions. Chefs? Smugglers? Sound good? Sound bad?
