Thread: Thinking about career change, have questions
Okay one of my friends quit SWG and in the meantime, I'm going to use his account. SoI was thinking about a chef type character but realize I know almost nothing about the class. All I ever see are people talking about Bofa treats (cheap easy to make), Sunburns (I guess these give a good buff, never used one), and Air cake (I like these for after I revive someone to help unbug stats). I know with milk being an ultra-rare drop the things based on it cannot be made, but what else is there to make? Am I reduced to three different items?
chef is basicly useless right now , besides about 3-4 items that have tiny usefulnesss..
basicly by becoming a chef you enter the realm of I am waiting for the devs to fix me.. But it looks like where last in line behind most everyone else because well the chef isnt ment to have and game breaking abilities i gues.
I beg to differ.
I started out as a Master Doctor and while it was really into the thick of things (crafting, hunting, res calls, harvester management, pvp, and just about everything), it was simply too involved for the amount of time I had to play - especially since I was part of a very large PA.
I switched over to Chef so that I could play at my own pace. The demand for our products is rapidly growing as the amount of disposable income in the galaxies has reached a fairly steady state. Sure about half our recipes aren't very worthwhile right now, but can you not say the same about weaponsmith? People tend to pick out the very best of the lot and a market develops for them. In our case, Tatooine sunburns rule supreme as they are relatively low level items and can be churned out in large quantities. Demand for +mental food is way up. Demand for other stat specific foods is also there - a lot of players, especially the combat inclined, like to buy these foods so they can "overequip" their armor.
One of my friends stated this truism - play the popular and uber classes and face nerf. Play the harder, slower, tougher classes, and see gradual changes that enhance your enjoyment of the game. I like this latter notice as I no longer have time to power game like I did while in college. Chef's are getting better every week. The market is growing, my skill is going up nice and steadilly (prob mid october or so when I master), I have a large social base who knows me, and fixes affecting our effectiveness are coming at a fairly steady pace.
I enjoy chef. I'm no longer going nuts each day. ![]()
I will admit that the inital Novice Chef hump is a pretty hard climb - wastril bread grind is very slow. But once you get to Entree 1 (for stewed gwouch) or Mix 2 (for ithorian mist), life gets so much easier.
Once you get Mix 2 and Cooking 2, you're downright productive.
Do you need to grind? Yes, for a short period of time. But all other craftsmen with the exception of architect are in the same boat.
Hehehe my main character is a Master Doctor/almost Master Combat Medic. I know about grinding crafting (Medic Grinding, Doctor Grinding, Combat Medic Grinding and now Artisan and Chef grinding.

For those saying we've been getting gradually fixed: how so?
Factory crates were fixed. But oh wait. Now our food stacks break halfway through use anyway.
I quit making food on a daily base a couple of weeks ago, to take up weaponsmithing full time until they decided to fix chef.
If by the time that the new bio-engineer fixes(in the next big patch) are in, the promised "balance pass" for chef hasn't been put in, I'm quitting chef entirely and going bio-engineer which sounds quite interesting.
Now would be a really bad time to become a chef. Wait till its been fixed to see if its worth it.
