You know, I probably should add a "how to get from Novice Artisan to Novice Chef" section to the grinding chapter of the FAQ.
The best xp per item at the lower boxes of Artisan are survey and non-generic crafting tools. If you stick to survey tools, you can get by just harvesting metal, crafting tools require a chemical component.
You get 2xp for every unit of resource you use up making Artisan items, so your raw units of resources required are pretty set in stone. To maximize your gain per item, look through your draft schematics for the ones that use the most resources. The highest xp items in Artisan are the personal harvesters, but you would have to get up to Engineering III to make those. Engineering isn't required for chef, but on the other hand those skill boxes do give you artisan experimentation points, which are used when experimenting on the Domestic Arts foods.
If you want to stick just to the Dom Arts tree, try this:
Mineral/Chem/Flora Survey Tools to DA2-> Shortsleeve shirts to DA3 -> soft undershirt to DA4 -> Large glasses to Novice Chef
