I am not a total noob to the game, however I am one to crafting. I understand in order to compete with other chefs on my server I need to be a 12 point chef, correct? I also realize this is going to require lots of cash. What kind of things can i get, ie chef apron. that will make it easieron me. Also, what if I buy 12 +1 food expermintations? Will I have 12 sockets available on my clothing? Please help I am one lost crafter.

Having 12 points isn't required, but does help distinguish you from other chefs. I get by ok with only ten points, myself.

But, if you want to go that route, here's what you need:

1) You get one additional point for every +10 bonus in tapes, so you'll need at least +20 worth of tapes to get 12 points.

2) Right now, putting a tape into a piece of clothing with the same bonus (whether it's the crafter's apron or had prior tapes) does not stack bonuses. You end up with only the higher of the two. So if you put a +4 tape into a crafter's apron (with its built-in +5), it ends up only as +5. If you put a +6 tape into the apron it becomes +6 (not +11).

3) Because of that, and you only have a limited number of pieces of clothing you can wear, just accumulating a bunch of +1 tapes won't really be enough. IIRC, the pieces you can wear simultaneously are: shoes, pants, belt, shirt, jacket (apron uses this slot), gloves, bandolier, and hat. A bandolier uses the same clothing slot as a backpack (which cannot take tapes), so you'd have to give up inventory space for that. This is only eight slots for most races, seven for Mon Cal (can't wear gloves), six for trandos (since they can't wear shoes or gloves), and I'm not sure what is available for wookiees.

4) Not all clothing has sockets, especially with a tailor fix recently that reduced the number pretty drastically. A Master tailor is almost guaranteed at least one socket, but four-socket clothing has gotten much more rare. Socketed clothing will be a different color, and will say "Free sockets: ##" in the description.

5) Prices for tapes are very high, but do vary by server. Most seem to go for 100k per point for less than +5, and up to a million per point for bonuses larger than +5. Since crafter's aprons give you +5 and tend to go for 200k to 500k, that is definitely a cost-effective purchase. Tape sales are usually up on the trade forum for your server, you'll rarely find any for sale on vendors (and those are likely only +1 or +2). You can also try looting them yourself if you've got the combat skills, but I don't know if there's any "more likely" mobs that drop them. In general, higher-level mobs drop better loot, so if you can take on a Nightsister...

#2 has pretty much been confirmed as a bug, but no real word on when it's going to be fixed. There are also tapes with multiple bonuses (such as "+4 Food Experimentation, +2 Dodge"), those seem to only give you one of the bonuses, not both. A bunch of theories are out there about which gets picked (highest bonus, first listed, first alphabetically, etc), but I don't know how well they hold up.

And if your question is blatently not in the FAQ, I hope you don't think you have to point out that you checked it. We don't come off as that hostile, do we?

Prices can vary a lot by server, but the crafter's aprons are a little tough to get. First the tailor has to get the schematic (not too hard, anyone doing the Jabba's theme park gets one)and the type is random (chef, doctor, architect, and....armosmith I think are the four types). They also need two identical "Heavy duty Leather" components, which only drop as loot, and not always in sets.

If you don't have the money, you can do the Jabba park for the schematic (can be done as a low-level elite combat profession), try to get the leather and work a trade with a tailor. If you provide the schematic and the components, some tailors will do an straight swap since they get two more uses out of the schematic. Your best bet would be one that already has the chef apron version learned, since there's no details on which version you get with the schematic scroll.

okay, still a little confused on the whole 12 point bit. Did u say I will need +20 food exper. mods to be a 12 point chef? Are you counting on me already having an apron? Where can I get a chefs hat, and does that have any mods?

Thanks again

You get an additional experimentation point for every +10 in your "Food experimentation" skill. At Master chef you have "+100 Food experimentation", so you get 10 points. The +20 for 12 points could be from any source, including the +5 from the crafter's apron. You can get up to +25 from tapes/apron, and some chefs do since that extra +5 gives a slight improvement to the frequency of better success types when experimenting ("great" instead of "good", "amazing" instead of "great").

A chef's hat is just a normal piece of clothing that tailors can make. They can be socketed, so you can add modifiers (through tapes), but they don't come with any built-in. Also, make sure you're getting a "crafter's apron" with food experimentation mods, there's a normal apron that is just normal clothing.

Just to add...because Aprons are more common it seems (atleast on my server) than those pesky experimentation tapes...you could prolly get a +5 food exerimentation apron fairly easily. Prices depend on the server - but it shouldn't be too hard to get since once you have one...you don't need any more aprons cuz you can't wear more than one . So these schematic folks needa customer base. Whereas the tapes are a different story. This is extreme...but a couple +1 tapes on my server (Corbantis) are currently going for 1million each!!!!!!!!!! (/cry) it used to be that you could get them for 50k...not they're so rare, they're being bid up to a million. Don't even ask me how much a +3 is going for....

signed,

a broke chef

(I'm 11 points by the way...and I do alright. Work on getting good resources and use Bespin Port to get good successes and you might just be able to make the uber stuff the 12 point chefs do. (i.e. 45 minute 400+ brandy)
