You need to spend money to make money though. When I first became a chef, I easily spent 80 million just to get started, and that was only the beginning. If you're expecting to jump in and start making money right away, you'll be sorely disappointed, unless you already have a stash of nice resources that are chef-specific. There isn't a single crafting profession that you can just pick up and start raking in cash with right away without having money to dump into resources. Building a real profit-turning business requires a lot of work and dedication, but if you have the time to devote to it, you'll be able to make a nice amount. I have to say, though, that it always makes me a little sad when I see people pick up chef as a get rich quick scheme. We all started for different reasons, but I'd like to think that most of us that are still around are here because we really love the profession, regardless of the money it does or does not bring.

i opted not to get another account for a chef on the same server and instead made a toon on a totally different server. i picked the right server, i guess, because a great guy named Beachur has sponsored all of my cheffy endeavours.i see how much i love this profession and am reconsidering getting an alt for my main fighter on kettemoor and making him a chef!

80 MILLION!!! Yes i do like chef over all the other crafting proffessions and it will be an on-going project,im sure grinding jedi will get very boring. But with18 lots for Flora harvies, surley i dont need that much?? I have 1.8 million ATM and see no way (after CU) for a fighter to make good money other than to camp loot caves... I do NOT intend to buy creds off ebay - is it still do-able? Has anyone had chef as their first elite proffession, if so how did it work?

Well I started off and it took me between 40-50 mil to do so.
You see, not only do you need great resources but you need to be a 12 point chef as well, you can do 10 point foods until you can afford 12 points but you won't get to much buisness and it's a slow going.
I have over 30 lots for harvs, it's not the point. The thing is good spawns rarely come around and they are so few and far between that you will end up having to spend 4-10 cpu for your resources. It adds up very quickly.
Don't be discouraged though it's doable. Auction off your ADK's if you have any lol, that's how I got my money to do it.

I'd say 80mil to get started sounds about right... need deeds for factories, storage and harvs, resources (there's such a wide range of resources we use, I can almost guarantee you'll need to buy at least some), tapes, crafting stations and tools, BE components, etc. It takes quite a bit of time and money to get started, but it's worth it. Definately not boring if you've got a high volume vendor.

Ya let me clarify, 40 mil to get you started with about 4 foods.
So to be a good chef with 10-12 foods ya 80 mil sounds right.

well i have a friend that supplies me with resources and bought me most of my suit (7pts was given by a ex-chef guildie) so it has only costed me 2-3mil but thats because i have a friend willing to help me. i still have made no money at all on chef though since i have not had time to make a large stock to keep a vendor going......so i dont know the real amount it takes to start it but if you wanna get started you better stay with it.

Any crafting prof can make you lots of money its just how much effort and time you put into it.
I started out as a chef and spent about 2mill on resorces to grind it off the bazaar in C-net.
Then i went out and did Enraged Rancor missions and got about 1.2 mill to get started. I made some canape with 250 heavy Tissue I bought and sold each crate for 200k and made 2mill right there. So you dont have to have that much money to start off with.
For resorces i asked some chefs if they had any small amounts left over that went enough to do big runs, so i got some cheap resorces to do small runs and make little money at a time to build up.
(Sry if its hard to read im tierd)

My alt is a chef now, I started at launch, collected some resources for Chef, mastered it and dropped down to 0/0/4/4 by the time they added badges so Neeno never got his badge but I kept all the resources around so I've never had to worry about looking for those and my prices are low enough that I get tapes donated to me. light additive foods 75cr per use, mediums 100/use and heavy depends on how heavy it is, 250/use is my usual but for some it's 500/use(smuggler's delight,Rakririan burnout sauce). Anyway, chef can be a good money maker if you charge the amount things are selling for on your server. I've earned 13 million credits between my Chefing and Weaponsmithing(no longer a WS), I live comfortably and it all works out well. The amount you need to start out depends on your friends and community/guild. If you have to buy everything then ya, you need a LOT of money. If you are seen more as a service then you'll get to make food for almost free.
For example, at any time the city I live in will go hunting for meat for additives, post CU it isn't unusual to have 100k-250k of meat in a matter of 2 hours, and I only pay 3cpu or in crates of food. Make some friends, make some business deals and everything in the game becomes relatively cheap. I love my community, they love me and together we all have fun instead of grinding credits to survive.
To the original poster: If you need such massive amounts of money I would say you're trying to do it the wrong way. Get JTL and fly, you can earn 3 million creds a day selling looted parts, and you don't need to have an alt to do it, any old jedi can fly safely in space. Crafting is time intensive, surveying takes yet more time, finding your resources takes time and factories take their sweet time to make things. A get rich quick scheme is not found in crafting these days, íts a lot of expenses and inventory to keep track of. Less than top of the line doesn't sell for long if at all so if you're going to do any crafting be sure you're doing it the best you can.
