Well, that just depends on what you are gonna make, I'd say. At novice Chef you can't make many useful things, so you might as well just grind through that making soypro and eating it (it's not so bad as it looks) and then go for blue milk as that's quite popular, or so I have found.
The different schematics all need different ingredients. When you access your crafting tool you can see what you can make and what it requires. You can also see what qualities it has (like nutritional value, flavour, filling, and quantity). Nutritional value has to do with how powerful the effect of the food/drink is, flavour has to do with how long the effect lasts, filling has to do with (duh) filling, and quantity with (duh) the amount of stuff that you end up with.
All these qualities need different statistics in ingredients. For instance the nutritional value of breath of heaven relies for 66% on potential energy and for 33% on overall quality, and we don't even want to know what that remaining 1% is
Anyway, if you're keen on having good nutritional value, you might want to look for resources with high PE and high OQ. There are several sites on the Internet that list the current resources available on your server and the stats that they have. For instance there's swgcraft.com, but I'm sure there are others too. Another way is to just go out there, hunt some animals, and see what kind of meat or milk or whatever they give. Or sample resources with a handy flora survey kit.
Flora resources and animal harvests will be most of your requirements as a Chef, also a bit of water, and a bit of gas and other inorganics. You'll find that having Scout skills will help you on your endeavour as a Chef, if only for milking the creatures (you need to mask scent for that).
I hope this helps.
