Ok, this has probably been asked before, and I'm really really sorry if it has... I can't find a real answer anywhere so I'm asking anyway.
I don't have a lot of experience with experimentation in crafting. I've been a tailor for a long time, andtailors don't have to worry about that, as most probably know. My understanding of the "12 point" thing is that it's really only 2 extra points.... is that right? You need +25 total to get what's called 12 points, which only amounts to 2 actual experimentation points. That's what I think I read. Very confusing
Anyway, question is this: Is it really worth it? I figure it is, people advertise their 12-pointness so it must be nice to have. But with prices of those attachments what they are, I'd like someone's opinion. Can a person really compete without those extra points... or should I start removing an arm and a leg in preparation

The 12pt. thing basically refers to the amount of experimentation points we have. It really is only a 2 point difference when you add an outfit with +20 experimentation. (Totally confusing that you have to have +20 experimentation to get 2 points of experimentation. The wording is wonky.) I've seen some people refer to themselves as 2 point chefs, and some people refer to themselves as +25 chefs. I don't know..lol.
There is a marked difference between 10 pt. chefs and 12 pt.-ers, which is why you usually see insane bidding wars for even the smallest food exp. tapes. I'm sure some of the others will be able to go into more detail about what sort of stats you could hit with 10 points vs. 12, but I'll leave the technicalities to them.
Break out the anesthetic. It might hurt a little, but what's a limb when you can be a 12pt. chef?!

If your going to be doing chef long term, making a career out of it, then make the investment and get your +20 however you can to become a +12 pt Chef.
In some professions I think 12 pt is way over rated. Take Artisan for instance. I am a 12pt Artisan also. Most things you make as Artisan are one or two lines of experimentation, which means even with 10 pts they cap out normally based on resources. Bottom line, on most Artisan items even using uber resources your up to 95%+ on your experimentation, out of boxes, and you still have 1 or 2 pts left over. So, other than for advertising purposes, it's not worth much.
With chef, 12pts is huge in the competative chef market. Most people will travel in game to a vendor with the "best" stuff in terms of chef food provided you are competative in your pricing. Those extra 2 experimentation pts in chef are ALWAYS usable as you have nutrition, duration, filling, uses always to experiment on. You will never have pts left over when making chef food, so, the 12pts always makes your food better.
Lets use an example. Using very good resources on my server I make standard Bivoli at 25.172 for around 15m 12s. Getting over +25 seems key to most doctors in terms of sales/using this and minimum duration of 15 min seems to keep them happy. With 2 extra points I am able to make Bivoli that goes to 25.389 and duration of 16m 28s. Does not seem like much but if your advertising against other chef's and they all have 25.172, and you have 25.389, then guess where people will come shop?
With the combat revamp coming I am hoping chef becomes even more important than ever. Hopefully our food will be even more necessary when out grinding or doing PVP.
I searched for months for food experimentation and assembly CA's. I had aquired some here and there, +1's and 2's, but I still needed one "big" pointer. Realize with only so many clothing items you can wear that having all +1's or 2's won't get you to +20....you run out of slots first. (side note...lets say you have a chef hat you put a +2 chef experimentation tape in.....then you get a +1 from someone. You can't put it in the same hat, they are not "additive".....if you drop it in that hat the +1 basically goes POOF...so you need multiple articles of clothing). Anyway, at some point your going to need a couple of +5's or one big one over +10. I paid on my server $25 million for a +11 food experimentation tape. It put me over the edge to +20 and made me a 12 pt chef. I was then able to advertise that way and within about 5 weeks I had paid off that tape investment and was making full profit again. It is worth it.
Finally, being +12 won't do a you a bit of good if you don't have uber resources. So start collecting now. Having a huge array of high quality flora to pick from will be huge for you to be competative long term. Good flora resources ALWAYS go up in value also..just depends on how long you want to sit on them. When an uber shift of something comes in (say all 900+ stats) I drop all my harvestors on it and contract some out also....you can get contracts on my server for around 3 cpu from miners. In the process I will collect 10+ million units of something uber, more than I will ever use. But stuff you have even 4 or 5 cpu invested in will sell for 8 to 10 cpu down the road....I have been around since beta and I have seen this play out time and time again. As a side way of making extra cash it's a great way to use your knowledge of what is "good" for resources to make wise investments.
I have done over 20 professions. Not in grinding for Jedi but because I wanted to try out different professions and see what I liked. If you like crafting and making lots of different things with different resources chef is hard to beat. It has kept my interest long term in this game.
Good luck. As you get rolling on this if you have questions feel free to shoot me across server /tell or email, glad to offer my opinion/advice on anything.
