I want to be a chef. No grinding allowed. I have a question for you masters.

How many experimentation points will I need to be successful? Could you please list how many exp points you have, and how you got those points (ie skilltapes, robe, etc.)

I am very new to crafting and was wondering what level tapes are floating around, and the best way to use them.

I have one extra experimentation point. A friend gave me a +7 tape, and I bought a +4 for two million credits. Tapes are really, really, really expensive (figure around 1M per +food experimentation point, so 10M per extraexperimentation point). Probably even more so now that the borgle cave was nerfed. The crafting apron will help somewhat - will get you your first +5 for not that much money. But then you'll still need another +5 for that point.

Frankly, you don't need the extra points to be successful. People will still buy your stuff if you pay attention to resources, figure out where experimentation points are best spent, price fairly, advertise, and keep a well-stocked vendor. You'll have to work hard to build a business if your server is anything like mine - there are over 70 chef vendors on the Naboo planetary map on the Kettemoor server.

That said.. go have fun and cook up a storm!

I have +20 experimentation and +25 Assembly. Apron gave +5/+5 and the rest were looted skill tapes. Some I looted and some I purchased. 1 to 1.5 million per pointis/was what they go for on gorath. If the borgle cave was nerfed, expect prices to go up before to long...

When crafting items that have multiple lines to experiment on, skill tapes become important. The extra 2 points really do make for better brandy, for example.

Here is how I craft schematics and I realize 14 exp points worth of use:

Pyollian cake +14 and my +25 assembly tapes allow me to get amazing success on initial combine easily.

Bespin Port and +20 experimentation tapes allow me to get amazing experiments more easily.

Craft in Research City for the +15 crafting bonus

I always make sure I get an amazing combine and at least two amazing experiments. Combine that with the two extra exp points, I get about 14 points worth of experimentation. 4 points really does seperate your product from a Master that is simply getting 10 points, I usually need 5 crafting sessions to to do this then I make a schematic and run em off

The real question is.. hypothetically you spend 20 million credits on two extra experimentation points.. so your food is better.. you charge more.. but how much time does it take to earn back that 20 million credits? If you can raise your prices 20%, then you need to sell 100M worth of food to recoup.

I've been playing since last July.. pretty much a full-time crafter. Most of that time was tailor, the last few months chef. My bank account has never reached 20 million credits through regular sales. I'd maintain that the average personwon't recoup that 20Minvestment for a very, very, long time.

Now, some people like to have the extra 2 points to make the "best food" and that's all well and good.. but I can't justify spending everything I've earned over the past 8 months to get there. And frankly, I bet my 11 point brandy sells for the same price as other people's 12 point brandy, and even the 10 point brandy.

So, I maintain that you don't "need" the extra points to be a success as a chef.

Kette *is* pretty bad, Naboo in particular. None of the people who made master before I did are still around, so it's been interesting to watch the chef population evolve (read: boom) since summer. /wave Ri'a

I used to think the tapes were a ridiculous expense and I boycotted them for a long time. But what else is there to do with the money? I finally gave in last month and got enough for 2 extra points. I wouldn't say it's required, especially if you have a nice client base and have cheap prices. But it really helps negate weaker resources, and makes a marked difference in the quality of BE products. It can't hurt to save up for them; at some point there's nothing else to spend cash on except meat, milk and BEs.

I have 10 experiement points. I got them by mastering chef. And I do just fine.

I've looked into getting tapes, but the prices are way too high. To put it into perspective, I've been cooking sinceday one(I believe I'm the oldestcontinuous master chef in my galaxy). I was selling food back when factories gave one-use stacks, when stacks were bugged, and when eating food could kill you. I had a food shop back when Tatooine Sunburn was the only thing people would buy. I've never chased holos or taken a break. I have 8 factories all pumping out edibles. And to buy the skill tapes I'd need to get 2 extra experiment points, at the prices in my galaxy, would take nearly the entire contents of my bank account - almost all the profit I've made at my craft these many months.

It's just not worth it to me. My food sells well enough, and not so fast that I have to spend all my free time cooking. I've built a reputation for my shop of having a huge variety of foods, using quality ingredients for the best result, knowing where to wisely put experiment points, selling the goods in singles and small packs as well as full crates, and being stocked all the time. That's what brings the customers back, even if my buffs are a few points off Joe Uber's Crab Shack down the road. And to be honest, all the experiment points in the world are not going to help you if your resources suck. Hunt down the best ingredients you can find, and you'll be making good food no matter how many points you have.
