Surveying comes with Artisan, so you've already got it. Being a scout could help as you'll be able to harvest your own hides and meat which are not readily available in large quantities and/or too expensive for newbie artisans in some cases.

Being a scout has the added benefit that you can set up a camp to help recover your Mind pool when your a sampling organic resources for your food.s

You don't need it but it makes things a lot easier.

Scout is really handy for one reason, I can mask scent when a clock of reds has appeared right on top of one of my harvesters.

I took scout to Exploration 2 and I'm leaving it there. Might go to 3 one day if masking starts failing on bigger mobs.

Well to become a chef you need to have crafting skills.. to have crafting skills you need to craft stuff, to craft stuff you need to gather resources which includes serveying. So while your grinding away crafting to get xp to become a chef you automatically get serveying skills at the same time.. kind of a win/win situation..

Of course unless your just buying all your resources and crafting, i guess you don't need serveying. But that would be expensive to buy all the resources to become a chef. seeing as you need Domestic arts 4 which takes 10500 xp points then need 19000 to become a chef. alot of resources you would need to buy.
