I'm sorry, but when novice smuggler can produce an item that is on a level/above almost all the entire chef line alone, something os wrong.
When 10% of our items cannot be crafted due to milk being rarer than a Jedi, something is wrong.
When eating several Dom Arts foods buffs more than novice chef foods, something is wrong.
When buffs stuff up your stats, something is wrong.

A Smuggler gets 4xp per resource on spices, compared to Chef's 2.
A Smuggler needs a grand total of 56,000 XP to get to Muon Gold/Neutron Pixie, a chef needs 819200 to make Master, and inferior buffs to Spices IV.

Yes, spice has a downer, but so do most foods, it's just that the downer is in with the buff, not after.

You have to remember, Doctors can heal, buff, revive, cure. Smugglers slice, have a pistol line, get faction cost discounts and make buffs. Chef ONLY makes buffs. That's it, that is our only reason for being.

I can live with Master Doctors buffing for more, for 2hours, after all, you can't carry a doctor around in your pack. I cannot live with Spice outbuffing almost all food.

The call for a balance pass isn't to make us uber. It is to bring us into line with at LEAST smuggler, we should be between smuggler and doctor IMO.
Add to that the fact that our lines are all over the place, Tatooine Sunburn should be at Master level, not Mix II. In my opinion, that is a Master level Buff, and should be the standard for all other Master items.

I'm not going to flame you for your opinions, but I do disagree.

The Chef IS currently broken due to the stacking buff bug, and it desperately needs a total balance pass to put us at least on a par with Spices.

I also (non-flamingly) disagree.

Even in a vaccum from all other professions, ourschematics are not meaningly laid out in terms of buff type or even usefullness. Some of our schematics are broken (rumdrop, wedding cake)and some of them cannot be made due to missing game mechanics (milk!). Adding on the fact that food doesn't work right now (frankly, I think it's outright dangerous), and you are hard pressed to say that the class isn't broken.

Now, take us out of the vaccum...add on comparisons (for game balance issues) to other professions, and it's clear that either the food must become more powerful, the other classes need to be nerfed, or new functuality needs to be added to the class. Most of fatgit's post addresses this.

I agree that we aren't totally useless. I made my fortune as a chef in about a month as well. Advertising your food is quite easy, just leave the Master Chef tag on for about a week, and you will get at least 3 people saying "Wow, a master chef" and likewise, at least 3 new customers.

However, you can't make XP when selling, and you can rarely sell what you grind. It really takes about 320k capital to grind to master in order to make a business out of it.

i'm two boxes away from master chef (des4 & mix4). i have not ground the required 44k of wheat (or whatever that insane number is) for the ithorian mists, but its sitting in my inventory looking awfully lonely... heheh it will happen, eventually.

now, i want to re-propose an idea. that idea is that chef is not broken. there are items in nearly every box that can be used to make money. they make money because someone out there is willing to pay money for this stuff. granted there are items in other boxes that sell even better than some items, but the point is they sell.

i currently make about 200k - 500k a week and i don't really want much more business than that. even during the broken stack bug, i was still making enough to run my harvesters - barely. i wholesale my goods to a good merchant friend of mine who then tacks on a percentage and resells. and this i like. i'm one step removed from having to explain to people what to use which food stuff for, which is one of the biggest turn-offs for me in the chef profession. you know, no one asks a weaponsmith what a Laser Rifle is good for...

so why don't i think we are broken? i'm making more money than i know what to do with for one, and anyone with an eye for opportunity should be able to too. and the other main reason...

in my spare time, i've been playing a combat oriented character, focusing mostly on brawler. and i will tell you this: melee combat is REALLY pointless without a) armor, b) stims, and c) food. i sincerely doubt i would be as successful as i have been without using the following items religiously: iceblaster, firestew, tatooine sunburns, burnout sauce, and blood chowder. even with the current "one buff at a time" bug, each one of these play an important role for the entire melee class. REGARDLESS of the duration "limitations." and once the current bug is resolved, it will be a great day for chefs and brawlers alike.

so what if our buffs aren't UBER? they aren't supposed to be. SOE has already stated that SWG was not designed to be an "Uber Lewtz" game. so why is everyone insistent on trying to make it so? i HATE "uber lewtz gamz." yes, there seems to be discontinuity between domestic arts iv and novice chef, but its the same for every crafting profession that deals with degradeable items (ie weaponsmith and armorsmith). an engineer can make a better cdef than a novice WS can make any of their starter weapons. but get the experimentation line up and nearly everything you make will be better than any DA foods. Same goes for all crafting professions where experimentation matters.

The grind? yea, its pretty bad and has caused my hands to hurt on more than one occasion. but as some have pointed out, its not as bad as weaponsmith.

so what exactly is broken? besides the obivious current bug?

i really don't think chef is all that broken. its not very fun, i will whole-heartedly admit that, but broken? no way. i think it all boils down to unmet expectation.

for those of you interested, these are the food and drinks i currently produce (and sell):
Bofa Treats as Pet Food (NA)
Teltier Noodles (DAIV)
Blood Chowder (ENI)
Veghash (ENII)
Rakirian Burnout Sauce (ENIV)
Ryshcate (DSIII)
Tatooine Sunburn (MXII)
Iceblaster (MXIII)

and if you think this proves how pointless most chef food is, try to find some guns that aren't hot sellers. like a republic blaster. not sure why i wanted one, but it took me a little while to find one. and you know what? it has its use, but its not my primary gun. same thing goes for spraysticks. i LOVE my spraystick, close combat is impossible without it. i LOVE food, melee combat is impossible without it.

and i think i started ranting a few paragraphs ago... heheh

FLAME ON!!!
