Thread: There needs to be a FAQ for Non-Chefs
I have to second this proposal. I came here for some much needed answers about food. You see, I am a commando and I need my stats boosted quite a bit but what I am seeing is that I have to become a habitual drug-user....this displeases me greatly BUT, and a big BUT here, I know doodly-squat about achieving satisfactory stat/duration on buffs with foods! Not a clue...so I came here.
Everywhere I go, I see drugs, drugs, drugs and have taken to using at least Muon gold for the mind at 500 across the board for five minutes (dirty eyeshottin' BH's and CM's <shakes fist, heh heh>
, then I stand around puking and such until the effect wears. I am so pissed that SOE made drugs easy to find and use!!!!! Losers....
So on I go, hoping to find food one day that will buff me satisfactorily because some knowledgeable person has put together a list of foods and how to use them and HOW THE HECK TO FIND THEM or who to get them from. Is there a place that has this info already? I would think that all of the chefs out there would be clamoring to make their wares and benefits of those wares known throughout the galaxy.
We are finally having someone in the PA that is going to give chef a run. Help us get off of the drugs. I abhor them and despise myself for needing to use them to stay competitive. I do my best to run around as is but there are just times I have to have the buffs.
Well, honestly, it depends on what kind of food you eat. If you eat Domestic Arts food, you can eat 3 or 4 items at a time. If it's chef food, you can only eat two items at a time, until one wears off, and then you can eat again... (I would like this to change. I would like to eat at least 3 chef food items at a time). Right now, you can only eat one of anything until the buff wears off, because it will give you perma damage if you do.
Here's an FAQ I put up for my guilds members:
Since I've noticed a bunch of people don't even know the effects of food and drink, or how they can help you, I decided to use my expertise in this area to give everyone a better idea. Okay.... here it is.
What is food and drink?
Food is something you eat. Drinks are things you drink. Simple enough.
What good is food and drink?
Food and drink can be used to buff your HAM pools. A buff is something that gives you a temporary boost in any or all of the nine HAM pools. Some food only buffs one HAM where others can buff all nine.
How do I tell what kind of buff food and drinks have?
When you see food in your inventory, open its radial menu and select the examine button. When the new window pops up, it should show you how many buffs a certain food or drink has, what it buffs, how much it buffs, and for how long the buff stays in effect. It should look something like this: Mind +102, 342s
For items in a vendor, select the item you wish to examine and select the "Details" button at the bottom right of the vendor window. This will bring up the stats for that item. Examine everything carefully. Also, foraged food items can have buffs, as well.
What buffs are good and when should I use them?
This really all depends on the situation. If you want some fast regeneration of your Health pool, then you should eat some food that has a buff for Constitution. This would be great to use in the middle of a fight, because this effect takes place as soon as you eat it. Other foods that would be good to use in the middle of strenuous activity would be food that effects the drain pools, as I like to call them. These are your Strength, Quickness, and Focus pools. These ultimately decide how much Health, Action, or Mind points you use up when you perform a special task, for instance sampling minerals or using a special melee or pistol attack. Having a high drain pool would extremely helpful if you notice your gun or sampling macro uses up a lot of HAMs.
Food and drinks that buff Health, Action, or Mind should be eaten or drank before engaging in combat or any task that takes away from those pools. Why? When those pools get buffed, they have to regenerate the points it takes to get full. If you eat them and immediately engage in combat, you're only going to have the Health, Action, and Mind points you began with, and won't get the full effect of the buff.
Experimentation of food can increase these food buffs as well, and can sometimes even add buffs to food, if the ingredients are high quality.
Health: Represents your character' s physical health, including how much physical damage he or she can withstand (in some other games, the Health pool might be called your character' s "hit points") . Health can be depleted by many attacks, including a blaster bolt to the chest or being hit by a Tusken Raider' s gaffi stick.
Strength (Health Drain Rate): Determines the "burn rate" for any actions that drain from the Health pool, like using a special melee attack. The stronger a character is, the less Health he or she loses when performing strenuous activity.
Constitution (Health Regenerate Rate): Controls the Health pool' s recharge rate. A player with a high Constitution will recover more quickly from any attacks that affect the Health pool.
Action: Your character's physical energy. It dictates how often you can perform certain actions. Your Action pool drains when you' re hit by specific attacks, like a successful Leg Shot. The pool also drains when you use some special combat moves or use the Burst Running ability.
Quickness (Action Drain Rate): Controls how rapidly a player' s actions drain the Action pool. A character with a high Quickness can perform more Action-related special moves or use Action-related abilities (like Burst Running) more often than a character with a low Quickness.
Stamina (Action Regenerate Rate): The rate at which the player' s Action pool recharges. Characters with high Stamina are less likely to become winded by using Action- related moves.
Mind: Your character's mental strength, as well as a measure of his or her alertness and ability to complete technical tasks. Many special moves that require concentration (like Aiming) drain from your character' s Mind pool. Certain attacks, such as Head Shot, can also detract from your Mind pool.
Focus (Mind Drain Rate): Affects how greatly a character' s Mind-based actions reduce his or her Mind pool. Essentially, it' s a measure of a player's ability to concentrate when performing certain tasks. A character with a high Focus can accomplish more mental feats in a shorter period of time before becoming mentally fatigued.
Willpower (Mind Regenerate Rate): The recharge rate for the Mind pool. A character with a high Willpower finds it easier to regain his or her wits and recover from mental stress and exhaustion.
How long do I keep the buff?
It varies. Again, check the item to see how long the buff will last. It should look something like this: Constituion +73, 234s
This means that this food will buff your Constitution for 73 points, for 234 seconds.
Most food items will at least last for 100s. Most of the food that I make can last between 200 and 400 seconds. Experimentation on food can raise the duration of the buff. Be careful when buying food though. It may have a high buff, but it may only last for 100s. Go for a nice balance of buff and duration. Also, remember you can only eat until your food and drink meters fill up, and can't eat again until your meters go back down some.
What happens if I eat two or more of the same food?
If you eat, say, two K-18 Rations you will get two times the buff. K-18 Rations effect the Constitution and Willpower pools. So, let's say a particular K-18 Ration has the attributes:
Constituion +78, 278s
Willpower +77, 277s
This means that the K-18 will buff your Constitution +78 for 278 seconds and buff your Willpower +77 for 277s. Now you ate two of them correct? Well, the buffs are cumulative. You would now have your Constitution buffed +156 and your Willpower buffed +154. (I'm not sure of the duration is cumulative or not. I don't think so, but I will look more into this.) Remember that all food and drink buffs are cumulative.
Are there negative buffs?
Yes. Most alcoholic drinks and some foods have negative buffs. It should look like this when you examine it: Focus -18, 443s
Again, check carefully. You don't want to lower an already low pool. Choose wisely.
What kind of ingredients are used in food and drinks?
Nearly everything. Specifics include berries, wheat, wooly hide, hide, bone, minerals & metals, water, herbivore meat, vegetables, and meat. Chefs can use any kind of meat, bone, hide, fruit, or vegetable, but some recipes require a certain ingredient, like Talusian Fish.
What are good characteristics of ingredients?
For the actual food itself look at the potential energy and flavor values of the ingredient.
Flavor: Determines the duration of the buff. The higher the flavor value of an ingredient, the longer the buff will last.
Potential Energy: Determines how high the buffs on a food will be. The higher the potential energy, the higher the buff will be. Also, an ingredient with a high potential energy value will also decrease negative buffs.
Decay Resistance: Not sure on this at this time. Check back for more details.
Overall Quality: Not completely sure on this, but I do know it effects some foods. I am going to make the assumption that the overall quality effects every aspect of food, so the higher the overall quality, the higher the stat that requires overall quality effects. For instance, if the overall quality is determined in the flavor of a food item, then not only will the flavor of the ingredient be used in determining the duration of the buff, but also the overall quality.
Check your schematics carefully. Each part of the food requires different things. For instance K-18 Rations require meat, cereal, and fruit. Each of those serves a different part of the food, so be sure to look over the schematic before using certain materials. This schematic may only look at the flavor of the fruit used, where the schematic for Kanali Wafers may look at the potential energy of the fruit and not the flavor.
Tips and Tricks
*Get an assortment of food and drink and use them wisely. If you can find food that buffs two or three areas and find drinks that buff two or three different areas, you can buff that many areas at the same time. If you have just food that buffs a wide range of HAM pools, you would have to pick and choose, because you can only eat what your food meter allows.
*Remember that food and drink buffs are cumulative. So, the more you eat, the more you get buffed at that time, but do this wisely.
*Remember to always check buff and duration of food before buying from a vendor. You don't want to buy cheap food, or buy something that may buff the wrong stat, or ultimately hurt you more in the long run. If you have a low Constitution and you buy a drink that has a negative buff for Constitution, and you drink all of them, the cumulative effects may drop you extremely low, causing you to regenerate Health points slowly, or even cause your Constitution to drop below zero.
Flavor: Has little to no effect on food schematics (when tested).
Decay Resistance: Somewhat effects buff duration (along with other unknown characteristics, including mostly Unit Toughness)
Potential Energy: Generally affects the quality of buff (as listed)
Overall Quality: Generally defines the maximum possible stack size
There is also a website http://www.ralloszek.net/swg/ChefPricing.htm that list all recipes, and their average buffs. http://www.ralloszek.net/swg/ChefPricing.xls is a downloadable version of that file.
Caur,
Feel free to give me a tell. I spend many hours going over foods with customers to determine which works best for them, how many of each you can eat/drink, etc. I even give out samples to try until you decide which combination works best for you. My shop has every food/drink in the chef line for sale, with the exception of those requiring milk. Feel free to stop by. ![]()
Cami's Specialty Food and Spice Shoppe, On Talus, just South of Nashal, 4644, 4211. Master Chef and Master Smuggler items available.
Cameralli, Master Chef, Chilastra
This is just the type of info that we need to see.
btw Is drink also limited to two if made by chef?
Also what combinations do you tend to sell to each profession? Share your recipies so we know what to buy!
Can we sticky this post or repost that FAQ so it can be expanded on and possibly stickied?
First off let me say that I am not a chef. I am a Combat Medic/Carbineer so I have a lot of use for a chef's services. The biggest problem I have run into with chefs is that nobody knows what they can do. I would like to see a FAQ created by those of you that know best that addresses the issues for a non-chef. Some of these would be easy ones but should be addressed anyway. This FAQ should layout how the class is intended to work while noting bugs but not ranting. Remember these are pontential customers not members of you profession.
For example:
How many things can I eat or drink at a time? I have looked around this board and the lists that I do find show all the basic +s and -s of each piece of food but not how much of the food/drink bar in char sheet that eating/drinking one will take up.
Recommended combinations for each class.
Do foods stack? If i look at a single serving of food i am going to see pretty lousy stats when compared to things like spices or even each otherbut when it is made clear that these foods stack up to the eat/drink capacity then the true buff is revealed. This also works into the capacity question since if i can only eat 2 +50 stat items before reaching my capacity but i can eat 4 +35 items what is a better combination? What combinations counteract the negatives of other foods eaten at the same time?
A complete menu! What can be made at what level. This should be a copy paste from one of the sites out there with just the name of the item, duration, stats modifiers, and how much capacity it will take up when consumed (if we can even determine this). Remember this is for clients not Chefs.
Hopefully this will cut down the amount of repeated questions of "how do i use foods?" or "What can a chef do for me?" and make you guys lots of money and keep us all buffed up!
The following guide was posted by a chef a LONG time ago that has disappeared soemhow. All the values are base (Before Experimentation) and NOT using best resources. The filling Issue that you asked about with how much can you eat depends on the resource the chef uses to cook the food, but that is ALSO something that's buggy. you think you're making it less filling and in result sometimes you get a food that you can only take ONE bite out of. Without further notice........
The BiG Ole List of Chef buffs.
Hope this helps..

So you want to become a Chef ?
The Chef profession is the buffer in SWG or at least the one providing most of the buffs. The food and drink that a chef make provide an increase to various statistics during a certain amount of time for the consumer.
You can eat and drink multiple food/drink items and the effects stack but you also have 1 drink bar and 1 food bar which show you the limit on how much you can eat and drink, after that you have to wait for the food to digest until you can eat more. The Chef profession has not been very popular during the beta, I'd venture to say I was the only Master Chef during that time. But it has been fun and rewading for me, even if it wasn't economicaly viable I enjoyed Roleplaying as an Expert Bartender in the cantinas.
To become a Chef you have to train Novice Artisan and then climb up the Domestics tree which also includes clothing items, during this stage you get General Crafting XP. At Novice Chef and up you recieve food crafting XP. The xp you get for each item is easy to calculate as it is the resources x 2 in 96% of the cases (only a few recipes yield more or less xp).
The resources you will be working with are organic so you will be out in the wilderness with your flora surveying tool most of the time sampling for organics, some recipes also require inorganics in small amounts.
For meat, hide and bones you will need to do some creature slaying, and then extract those from the corpses, for this you will need to train Novice scout or you can buy them from other players.
One of the biggest problems for a Chef is MILK, during the beta milk has been mostly nonexistent. It seems that some NPC's have milk on their loot table but very rare and in low amounts.
Ok so you have some resources...now it is time to cook, you can use the Generic Crafting Tool at start but you will want to make or buy a Food and Chemical Crafting Tool sooner or later.
For those who will want to grind xp as fast as possible just look for the recipe with the most and easiest to get resources and start clicking. Later on if you got the cash buy some Flora Farms and a Food & Chemicals Factory. These require power and credits for maintenance, a factory is also a must for the higher level recopes which require identical subcomponents that only a factory can provide.
Food and experimentation:
This is no guide to experimentation just a few notes.
If you dont like to spend time looking for the best resources for a certain recipe just go for the resources with the best overall quality.
You got 3 values to experiment on
1. Flavor and Texture which allows you to increase the duration of the effect
2. Nutritional Value which increases the power of the positive buff and decreases the side effect
3. Quantity which gives your food additional charges

Crafted Food/Drink Buff list
You have 9 statistics in 3 groups (red, green and blue)
RED -------- Health, Strength, Constitution
GREEN --- Action, Quickness, Stamina
BLUE ------ Mind, Focus, Willpower
As far as I know it works like this ....very simple said strength affects how much health you loose when using health draining actions like berzerk skill and constitution affects how fast you regenerate health.
It is the same for action and mind.
Dont mind the numbers in ( ) those represented additional buffs to all other statistics beside the main one and it is currently buged after they fixed the experimentation bug.
For example:
A crafter sampling for resources will use lots of Action points, a good quickness buff will help you lose less action points, adding a stamina buff will make you regenerate those points faster.
A medic will use alot of mind points when using his skills so those mind buffs are good for him.
Regardless of all this the Chefs best customer is the Creature Handler who feeds his pets with your delicius food.

NOTES
* All information in this guide may change until the release and after. The info is accurate for the above date
* This guide contains information that may spoil your gaming experience
* The buffs varies depending on resources used, success rate and experimentation. The buff list in this guide lists the values without any experimentation and using random resources. The values WILL vary ALOT depending on those 3 factors. Please use the list only to get information on base values
* Everything herein is just my personal experience and opinion so if you dont like it don't read
* This guide assumes you know the basics of crafting
