Thread: Starting to Get Cynical

It gets really sucky when you've put up a few hundred items for sale and a big chunk of them don't sell within a week. I dread that "Auction Unsuccessful" spam as I know I've got the PITA of going back to the stockroom and placing the items back up for sale.

Sorry, but most elite crafters cant make much money till they're at, or near master. We can make money once we hit mixology II. Most of our buffs do need internal rebalancing, and some buffing up, but to claim we cant sell anything over 1K let me prove you wrong. Just examples of4 items I have decent, to goodsales from 2nd, 3rd, 4th, and mastertiers.

I sell a stack of 8 sunburns(you know the stats)for 3.2K.

I sell a stack of 5 iceblasters(+200 willpower, 3-4minutes)for 1K.

I sell a stack of 4 fried corellian ice creams(+400 focus, 10 minutes)for 1.2K.

I sell a stack of 4 vercupti of agazza boleruee(+400 willpower, -150 stamina, 10 minutes) for 1.4k

If I was greedy, I could let the stats drop a tiny bit, and allow myself to make bigger stats to get more profit. I consider it a matter of pride to make quality products, and to maintain a reputation of doing so.

I'm at master, and I experiment my foods to give me at least 4 uses, and after that work on the power.

I am currently constantly booked out to make foods, at a rate at which I can reasonably do so. If I was prepared to spend my entire time making food I could likely push 200K a day. I prefer to sit around, talking to friends, or take the time to pursue my alternate profession of pistoleer(which I dont use to make money at all... I've made about 10K money from pistoleer in the last 5 days). I haven't advertised at all, and normally CHOOSE to keep my vendor off the world map, because I am NOT ABLE TO keep it stocked, unless I spend hours daily grinding out food. I currently make about 50K daily, from about 30 minutes, to an hour of grinding out the orders(not including time to visit my harvesters all over the galaxy to ensure the best quality product).

I'm also cynical to a point: While my friends who are master weaponsmiths just need to stuff resources into a factory a few times a day, and can then sell items at 12-15K a piece(master weapons prices on our server are horribly high), I need to manually grind every item, when I SHOULD be able to stuff my things in the factory overnight, and once I log back in, stick the product on my vendor and profit. This is however due to a bug, and hopefully will be addressed sooner than later.

Regrettably the way the crafting system works in this game, nearly all novice crafters are useless when placed in competition with their higher level comrades. If you want to make a generous living, you have to grind to the top. Its not just a chef problem that it sucks to be a novice.

It looks like I'm forever doomed to play devils advocate for SOE. No, I dont have any affiliations with them, and yes I do agree our profession needs a lot of work.

You know, I hate to say it, but I'm starting to get very cynical about the whole purpose of the Chef class, and how SOE intends for it to fit into the commerce system of Star Wars Galaxies...

I make food that few people want, and almost universally people will buy spice instead of my stuff even if they do want to purchase buffs. I can live with that - it's a comfortable living selling stuff every now and then. However, the ingame commerce system absolutely is the worst possible design for a Chef to sell their wares.

We deal in what is probably the only product in the game that relies exclusively on the quantity of sales rather than the quality of them. Nobody sells any of our goods for more than 1K, so we basically only would be able to keep up with other crafting classes by selling many units of food. However, the game system doesn't support this, even a little bit. We can sell 25 items at once, between the bazaar and to other people's vendors. Our goods rapidly fill up the space capacity of a house, so unless you want to runseveral houses with a vendor each you'll never be able to keep up to the space requirements to make many sales. That leaves us the final option, hawking our wares in the open air - a problem, given that we can only carry limited loads.

I have 3 houses, 3 vendors. My maximum sales capacity for items is approximately 700. It takes me less than 3 hours to produce 700 stacks of food. Those 700 stacks, by the way, provide very little experience compared to the productions of other crafting goods - and there's no assurance that I can sell them.

This is a terrible problem for anyone who actually approaches the Chef profession from a mass-production mercantile standpoint, which is the approach needed to actually make the money to justify the profession's expenses. The game commerce system simply does not support sales in the kind of quantities that Chef requires to be credibly profitable.

When you add in the fact that most of my Domestic recipes are far better and easier than my Chef recipes, it makes me very cynical about Chef, and gets me thinking about whether the skill point investment is really worth the hassle...

Hmm weird. I get by (meaning I can cover harvester maintenance)off of an hour's worth of making food and puttiing it on bazaars and vendors. Occasionally the stuffdoesn't sell for a couple days and I may have to run acouple missions. On the other hand,I get the occasional bulk order that bumps up the bank account nicely.
