Thread: I'm grumpy

No, I'm not a holo chef. I chose to be a chef of my own free will.

I'm also not a hard core player. I play a few hours a week - maybe 4 times at 3 hours each.

I've been dabeling in the more advanced professions - First one I made was Chef. I did that some time in October. By November, I made it up to Mixology 2 so I could make "revenue generating Tat. Sunburns". That went ok... I made some money.

In November, I got enough pistol experience to make Smuggler. GREAT! now I can make Spices & Booze and fulfil my "purveyor of the immoral" character concept. It took me4 sessions to grind from novice to expert Spice. A week later, I had slicing 4.

In the same time, I grinded up to the 2nd box of cooking. But hey - I can make foods that add around +80 to +120 to a few stats (and a few -50s to other stats) and last for 4-5 minutes. Not bad (so I thought).

Over the next couple of weeks (up to now) I have made a couple of levels of dirty fighting (Smuggler skill) and novice Pistoleer.

But last night it all went to he11. A doctor friend of mine used his doctor buffs on me. He increased each of my health & action stats & sub-stats by 1,000 to 1,700 each. I thought "great!" and asked how long they lasted.

I figured they'd last about 3-5 minutes (making them better than the best chef buff, but requiring a doctor AND a medical facility to deliver). His response - TWO TO THREE HOURS!

I was floored. I had NO IDEA that doctor buffs lasted so long. I was able to take my piddly little chef to Lok and hunt solo there WITHOUT a pet with those buffs.

I have now come to the relization that the products of a chef is basically uselss with the exception of a few notable products. Given the option of becoming an advanced profession, Medic/Doctor is MUCH better than an Artizan/Chef.

I'm really dissapointed, since I thought the Chef was OK. I knew the buffs weren't as good as spice (which has drawbacks, which is a balancing effect), but they don't compare in the least with Doctor buffs.

Is there any chance this will be changed? Any rumors? Any plans? Will it be in the next patch, in a few months, or is it in the distant horizon? I like the idea of a chef, but didn't realize they were so underpowered until now...

Doctors can't buff mind. In a world of Master Doctors, your mind food/drink is still very valuable. Also, your food stacks with their buffs (it never hurts to have even MORE ham than what a doctor can give).

They are currently working on a complete revamp of the chef profession. I have seen some of the early notes. They are currently in the process of coding in entirely new buffs.

Not sure when we will see any of this stuff on the TC, but there is a light at the end of the tunnel.

Can Doctor buffs stack? I would assume not... Even so, my +600 to three stats isn't going to do much in relation (plus maxing out your food bar for an hour or whatever... ).

And for mind buffs, there are master dancers/musicans that I bet buff the same....

Doctors buffs cannot stack. That is the one advantage we have (including being able to stack with the doctor's stack)

Another advantage of food over doc buffs: if you die, you don't need to find another doc and pay another 6kcr for a new set of buffs.

I've been a Master Doctor for some time now, and with all the money I made selling buffs (basically Doctors only steady source of income) I figured I'd give Chef a try. I was really surprised with how poor the buffs were in comparison (no offense, but they really are). There are some advantages with Chef buffs:

1) Don't need a Chef to apply the buff, the player takes them and use as needed.
2) Don't require special location, you don't need to be in a Mess Hall to eat food.
3) Generally speaking (this isn't 100% true if the schematics I saw are correct) ingredients for Chef foods are easier to acquire than those needed for the good Doctor Buffs.

To make the Doctor Buffs as good as possible you have to collect resources through several resource shifts. Even if you don't go to that much trouble the buff packs still enhance for 800-1000 on average and last for well over an hour.

In my opinion, Chef foods need to be able to adequately and easily cover all the stats based on groups. Groups being Mind (Mind/Focus/Willpower), Health (Health/Strength/Constitution), Action (Action/Quickness/Stamina), Regen (Willpower/Constitution/Stamina), HAM (Health/Action/Mind), and Use (Focus/Strength/Quickness). Say 1 great food that hits each of these triplets, and perhaps a series of other foods that focus on individual stats.

The Doctor Buffs need to have a longer duration than food because they are a bit of a pain in the arse to apply. Chef foods can have a short duration (but should still be in the 15-30 minute range) but there needs to be some rhyme or reason to how full they make you. Doesn't do much good for a hunter to use food when the effect wears off and he is too full to re-apply the food buff.

I haven't been a Chef for very long, so my opinion probably isn't the best to go by. I've enjoyed what I've seen of the profession thus far and I hope the upcoming patches to a great job of bringing Chefs in line with the other Buffing professions.

Well, there at least one food that hits each of these triplets, it's just a shame that some of them are awful. My favorite is the HAM buff, Accarragm...less thana 100 point buff, and it requires 110 resources to max out it's potential. Great drink for mixIII, yet I've never seen it for sale anywhere...I think I'll go corner the market!

I've found too many schematics like this. If it weren't such a pain to purchase the large stacks of meats and hides that sell for 7-10cpu, then it might be more feasible to make. Right now,I can only manage to cook a few of these kinds of foods for my PA mates.

I still can't wait to see concepts from the Dev team on the revamp

I would love to see better buffs and whatnot for us...even more variety of what gets buffed...but food and drinks have a purpose and are very useful. Most of us are busy nearly every day making more food, restocking vendors, filling factories, and getting more resources. This alone would indicate that food is not worthless.

Sure some schematics are more popular than others...but I am amazed at what sells on the vendors...
