Thread: Ideas for Chef's who want to attract a bigger Clientele Base

I'm sure there are plenty of Chefs who may find themselves "challenged" when it comes to selling their wares. Alot of us Chef's don't bother operating vendor's in the "well known" or extremely "convenient" locales. Here are a few ideas that I have worked out, and that I am willing to share with the rest of the Chef community. Please feel free to add on to this thread if you wish.

Idea #1: Make use of the /notepad function. Better yet, assign it to a macro. In/notepad, I typically have a list of commonly used recipies, what ingredients they require, as well as what resource charactersitics I am looking for in order to increase the value of effectiveness, filling, etc. I also figure out how many of a certain resource that I need in order to make 40 crates (Manufacture limit on factoriesis 1000, you do the math). And, I also make a short little message in /notepad so that I can copy and paste it over to each item I sell (especially useful in idea #2). Plus, it gives you another means, besides email, to keep track of what customer ordered what, or who is on your mailing list, etc.

Idea #2: Make the Bazaar your advertisement friend. If I remember correctly, you can sell 25 items on the Global Bazaar at any one time. What I do, is I get singles of Angerian Fishak Surprise, or perhaps Ryshcate singles, and I sell them on the Bazaar with a brief message stating the name of my vendor, its waypoint, and its general location. Sometimes I even include a brief message stating what I typically carry in stock. Ensure that your product is decent, and refill the Bazaar when you sell about 10 items or so, and I guarantee that eventually people are going to remember your name, and will contact you with information regarding buying crates from you.

Idea #3: Make your vendor noticable. Advertisement again, this time from another perspective. If its worth it to you, go up the Advertisement Tree in Merchant and get up to the third skill box. Then register on the planetary map. Nothing beatslocation location location, but advertising properly runs a close second.

Idea #4: Another thing you can do, is make the sign on the structure where your vendor resides really stand out if you use hex codes (type in color your profyle in the Yahoo Search Engine to learn more) to color your signs. Also you can make the signs much more attractive if you use mutliple lines, instead of one long continuous stream of letters. In order to do this, stand at the structure terminal and open the option that says rename structure. Delete the name already on there, and then open up an email. Type in the message 9over multiple lines) in the email withwhatever you want your sign to post. Now you will have a much more professional image that is attractive and easy to read. (This will also auto center your text on your structure's sign)

Idea #5: I have instituted a Guild Rebate program with my guildmates. It works really really well. They typically buy crates of Fishak for 75k, and I give back approxiamately 10% of that sale to them, for being within my guild. You can expand upon this idea further if you want, and give likeminded faction members a discount or what not. For example, my guild buddy Aldric may want to buy a crate of Fishak for 75k. I log in the next day to see his purchase. I calculate roughly 10% and that comes out to 7.5k I then /tip Aldric 7500 bank . Then I send out a complimentary email message thanking him for his purchase, and that the tip is part of my Guild Rebate program. This can do wonders for your business if you keep your close guild mates happy. They will bend over backwards forwarding your name along to potential clients via word of mouth.

In conclusion, these are tactics that I am using. I hope that they serve you well.

nothing particular to add about advertising but you touched on the notepad...One very valuable use of the notepad (until the revamp) is to track serial numbers on drinks so that you can keep track of how many servings are in a stack for that run. I keep a list of numbers and servings and delete the oldest when I run out of room. Yes, sadly the notepad seems to have a size limitation

Some decent ideas. I've pretty much tried all but the rebate program.

This is what works for me:

1. I sell product on the bazaar (fishak and BoH only...used to sell pet food but stopped). In the description window I simply cut and paste "Visit my vendors at:" and the waypoints. In addition, I use 2 bazaar slots that has a bofa treat and a charde; each renamed with something along the lines of "Master Chef Vendor WP#,#. I have them both there as auctions for 3k. Once per week I spend 40 credits to keep the advertising there.

2. Build a mailing list. I built a client list for mailings that at the peak had nearly 300 names. Due to recent changes in my gameplay, I've had to stop adding people to the list as I could not keep up with that administrative side of the business. I used this list for a once a week or once a month press release (I run several vendors with differing industry products).

3. I talk to people. When I am ingame, I train folks, answer questions, help when I can.

4. I used to put my vendor waypoints on harvesters and factories. That became a bit tedious though when I was moving entire farms on 2 accounts weekly.

5. I used to sell directly in the cities...now I have no time to stand around and pawn my goods...if someone asks, I direct them to the closest vendor or if I am lucky, I have some stock in the bank.

All in all, my food business is fairly sucessful and I would like to believe I have a good reputation...but in the end all that matters is that the satisfied people return for more goodies. As long as they come back, the business is successful.

One Ad campain that made a HUGE diffenance was my weekly Menu post on my server board.

Every week I would make a post that listed my current stock complete with stats/charges per crate and the costs along with my location and maybe a little known food fact.

The people that frequent the server boards are usually the hardcore players/crafters and they have the means and inclination to purchase your wares.

Try it. it works wonders.

Listen to Lady Vishna. As far as I know she never did any promotional activity but a weekly ad on the server board. She could not keep up with sales...

I never really advertised at all. Ppl just came and they became more and more. I guess if you keep stocked, word travels by itself.

Thanks for this thread, very informative. Ive chosen a secluded location(rori, on my server theres only one player city there) and I cant take advertising 3(because I want to master pistoleer), so these extra ideas on how to generate business are very welcome. I suggest this be stickied to help out other business-challenged chefs.

I have yet to find out if this has any effect or not, but here's what I've done.

I have a separate vendor that just has a "menu" of items, all priced ridiculously high so nobody buys them. Then I include all my clever descriptions of the items, suggestions for what other foods compliment them, and I should add in a standard price per single/crate but I have yet to do so.

Then inside I have my "real" vendor where I keep my actual stuff.

One word: Coupons.

Make a novice Artisan item (can even be food), throw it in a factory so all have the same serials and either throw them on bazaar or hand em out. On the coupon put vendor wp and the amount the coupon is for. Let them know that to use the coupon they need to use the "Offer to Vendor" tab and offer the coupon for the coupons amount. If they try to offer it for more, reject it, their fault. It is VERY effective.

Also trying giving some free to your regular customers and just ask that they spread the word about your shop.

Word of mouth brings in tons of business. Once a day I make a sale from a person I have never sold to before.

Two words: Thank you!

The response to this thread may eventually give me what I have always wanted on these boards. One of those nifty yellow folders, or maybe even one of those folders with the flame on them (they are waaay cool) on a thread that I started.. yaay!

To answer JediBahamaMama's request for how to copy and paste. In your options (CTRL + O in game), there is an option to alter your key map. I don't remember what tab it was under, but I do remember that it was a little button sort of out of the way that lets you mess with your key map. Once you get to your keymap, move over to the "ALL" tab and look for something similar to text paste, text cut, and text copy. I think you just click on the one that you want to map, and then press a key, or a key combination to map (perform) that particular function. For example CTRL + 1 for me is to copy, and CTRL + 2 is to paste.

Very effective tool!
