Hi all, I am creating a Chef and Artisan type character from scratch - what is the best race to go and what sort of HAM shall I use?

You really wont use HAM much. BUT when you first start as an artisan, you will need to sample and sample and sampleso I suggest increasing your action and mind secondaries to max. Any race can work really. After you get survey IV, I gave my primaries a huge boost. The reason was to survive the occasional attack when out checking harvesters.
You may want to keep secondaries for action and mind still, so that you can survey constantly if you plan on looking for your own resources.
Anyways good luck.

I wouldn't reccommend creating a Chef from scratch... I know where I scratch - and that just isn't sanitary.

Actually, it all depends on what you want to do. Humans have some artisan bonuses (can't remember off hand - too busy scratching). However, Wookies have higher HAM to begin with (just don't wear any armor - and seriously, what are you going to do in combat... chuck eggs?). As far as HAM point allocation, I tend to use action and mind more than Health (surveying). But I rarely need to worry about HAM anyways.

Bothans have a mask scent bonus, which is helpful when you get the BE to go with your chef. As for the survey thing, yeah you need a few more points in the action pools, but you can also macro out a command for /sample; /pause 3; /sit; /pause 30; /stand; pause 1; /sample. It will take about 13 hours to go from novice to survey 4. However you can go non-stop by sitting between sampling.
