Thread: Interesting observation about Chefs vs. other crafters

You know a few threads down when someone asked about how much money we made in a day... I was really pleased to see for the most part that Chef's were very willling to volunteer the information that some days they make NO money. I think that is awesome. But more than that, I think it speaks volumes on the general good nature of Chefs vs. other crafters. Not to say all other crafters are ill-natured... but here is my observation:

Since taking up WS... I naturally made some WS friends to compare and contrast and pick up pointers. Well naturally in the course of that prices and sales come up... and it always seems to me many of the weaponsmiths I've talked too are... well for lack of a better word BRAGGARTS. It can be far and away from the topic at hand... but they will suddenly throw in the stats of some gun they just made and make some ridiculous claim of how much money they made that day or how much they make in a week. Sonaturally my curiousity is piqued and I go check out their stuff to see how uber it must surely be to sell that much... and it's nothing special. Anyway it just seems to me that Weaponsmith's seem to be out to IMPRESS the world with their wares and their money... Chefs (at least the one's who replied today) seem to be much more low-key and reasonable in terms of their products and credits they make... going as far as being perfectly honest that somedays they make no credits (which I'm sure happens to most Weaponsmiths too).

Anyone else notice this? Is it just me or are Chefs just more down-to-earth?

I'd be willing to bet one big reason is the consumability of food. If a weaponsmith sells a power hammer, they won't be selling another one to that particular customer for a while (never, if the buyer uses an ADK). So they have to sell themselves as the big guy/girl on the block. If you sell a crate of Breath of Heaven, that customer will likely be shopping around for more in a couple of weeks.

Then there's the variety of foods, which (in theory, I'm not sure how it plays out in practice) allows more chefs to market their food with less direct competition. And since foods use fairly generic resources (many with 10 choices to harvest per shift), it's easier (though by no means effortless) for a new chef to offer good quality wares, so the market is less dominated by players who picked up a hoard of uber Plumbum Iron nine months back.

Plus, chefs have always been more of a laid back and (dare I say) weird bunch of people. I mean, go up to anyone who doesn't play SWG (even other MMO players) and tell them you spend $15 a month to cook pretend food. I'd be willing to bet you get some odd looks. Chef attracted (and I think still attracts) a fairly unique demographic. Heck, look at some of the issue requests that went up in the past. Sure, there are the normal things like "give us more stuff to make", "improve stuff we make", but there was also a request for chef hats and aprons (which actually got put into the game). Give Bliznit half an excuse, and he'll jump in fervently campaigning for a /pietoss emote (preferably chef-only). And I dare you to find a post in another profession board like this...

Despite dropping my chef skills in-game, I still enjoy hanging out here, and probably always will.

especially if you can't even hardboil an egg IRL without checking a cookbook. my father is tempted to buy SWG just to see if i really can cook *somewhere* since i sure don't IRL.

As Chefs we get probably the most repeat business that most crafters, but I think as a chef you do it for the enjoyment and the satisfaction aspect not the money really. it's a time consuming proffession if you want to have a well stocked vendor, good food and repeat business. I also think chef is one proffession that allows youthe luxury if you will of taking genuine pride in your work and results.

But you are right I can go for days not make anything off my foods vendors then get slammed out of the blue and have to restock in one weekend

roflmfao!!!!!!!

Yes I agree tho. take myself for instance. During the respec period I tried a number of crafts and didn't like them. I then tried Chef and even tho I initially tried it for the credits, I quickly started enjoying it to the point that I now have 2 Chefs so I can craft quicker and now people have begun to know me more as my main chef than any of my other chars including my first one!!

As for how much money I make, Chef has always been good to me for the credits and it really has helped me enjoy other aspects of hte game but I will continue to craft even when the credits dry up and I will lose my Jedi long before I lose Chef.

As for other Chefs, on my server I bump most of the other Chef's threads, praise their food etc and I know a good number and chat and talk about different ingredients we use. Lets face it there is plenty of business to go around so no need to hoard it all!!!! I am satisfied that I am craftign well, have enough custom to make it worthwhile and have a good enough reputation....

I honestly just like running my shop

I enjoy providing a service to my fellow players and doing my little part to hopefully make our server a great place. I could retire x10 over by now after being a chef for close to two years. Its not about creds, its about the people

But is it not about the credits as you have more than enough?

The credits play a part for me. Not a deciding part but a part none the less. There are a lot of things I want to buy and thankfully I make enough to buy what I want.

I ran out of things to buy in this game a long time ago. I actually enjoy running my "virtual shop".

I like running my shop .

I've been a chef since July 2004. I have had some ups and downs, customers came and went. Had a real hard couple months after the CU. But I really just like stocking my vendors, saying hi to customers that come in. Shopping for resources, tissues, etc.

I'm clearly not in it for the money. I seldom have more than 2 million credits at any given time ( if I do generally means I've ordered tissues, meat, or something else someone hasn't delivered and I'm waiting. ).

Though my main vendors are all chef stuff ( 1 food crate vendor, 1 drink crate vendor, 1 drink singles, 1 food singles ) which I make. I also have a tool vendor and a power up vendor which I make. I sell fishing poles, bait and fish that I catch with my alt when I like the peace and quiet of fishing. Recently I found I had accumulated a good deal of old ship parts and ship loot so opened up a vendor for it to clear out some inventory room. I also buy spices from a friendly smuggler and resale them. I used to buy WUKs from the local WS before the CU changes, and I also made AUKs and sold those as well, I miss the little income they brought and folks asking when they will be stocked again.

My little shop isn't near the major shopping area of the server, but instead in the player city that I'm also mayor of now. My work schedule hasn't let me be on to much lately when my friends are on and I kinda miss them, but I've been working on stocking up and servicing them best I can .

Making food is an Art. Making nearly everything else in this game is a science.

That right there is the biggest difference in my eyes. As Chefs, we can't cap out multiple stats like WS's and AS's can do fairly easily. We dont even have to make food in just one way. In fact, you can make the same food with three different additives and have all three be incredibly useful and different from each other. Being a truly innovative Chef is not about the best resources or a 12pt suit. It is about understanding your customers needs and concerns. There is no one perfect food combination out there. Depending on how the food was crafted, there can be dozens of different combinations that will work very well.

No other Crafting profession has this to such a large degree. With us, everything we make is this way. BE's get an incredibly neat system when it comes to crafting pets, and Tailors are most certainly artists when it comes to designing outfits. But for BE's the pet crafting is only one small part, and for Tailors there is no true experimentation work being done.

We are the only profession capable of being true crafting artists in the SWG universe. Other crafters can be artistic in their crafting, but not anywhere near the level of control and individuality that we have available to us.

Truer words have never been said about Chef. I initally picked up Chef after the first revamp for the money. To be quite honest when I was about the money I made little. I got into the profession more, and testing things and it turns out I love "cooking". In the long debate about certain stacking rules and what is useful or not, I was never about sales. I never made any food post CU that was "broken" unless I made it for personal testing. I know I could have made veg and sold it very quickly but I never would until I knew it worked, even a little. Anyway, I think the reason why chef's are more laid back is because of the art. Lets face it, I use more or less the same resources the best chefs on my server use, but our food is vastly differing most times because we cater to our market. In the end my chef "alt" has become more of my main, and I spend most of the money I make on components and resources. That suits me just fine

This is a great discussion! I would definitelky agree that Cheffing is an art unto itself with a lot of variety. Maybe that does account for our "laid-back'edness".
