Thread: The big, bad Chef FAQ

I thought this might help out the up and coming chefs. I am currently 4 boxes from Master so I thought I'd share a few of my lessons learned.

How do I become a Chef?

Becoming a Chef involves taking the base Artisan Profession and then working up the Domestic Arts Tree. Once you become a "Homemaker" (The fourth box of the Domestic Arts tree), the Chef profession will be unlocked for you now. You still need to grind away a bit more on general crafting, though, because it takes a significant amount to initially take Chef as your next profession.

Wait a sec! I got novice chef as a profession but I can't make the recipes it says I can. What’s up?

Once you become a Chef you will need to get a specialized Food and Chemical Crafting Kit. You can make one with your basic crafting kit or you can buy one from another Artisan. Once you have one and use it you will see your new recipes. There are some rumors that if you experiment with them using the Engineering experimentation points they work better. In my case I have not seen this.

Ok I have my specialized kit but I still can't make one of my recipes! What now?!?

Some recipes require that you be in front of a Food and Chemical Crafting station to make. They won't show up in your list of makable items until you are near a station.

Ok where are these stations?

Well they are everywhere really. I know that in some cases like on Rori they are near the actual artisan trainer, but otherwise just ask your local Medic or Doctor. They have to use them for experimenting on Stim packs.

I heard about droids having crafting stations. What gives?

If you decide to have a droid, higher level Droid Engineers can put crafting modules in the droids. This will allow you to bring out your droid from your data pad and then start crafting as if you were right beside a food and chemical crafting station. Contact your local Droid Engineer for details.

Ok I have all the things I need to be a Chef, what do I make to get the best XP?

As a novice Chef you get 7 new recipes to play with. Feel free to try them all, but the one that is most efficient at your level is Wastril Bread. Right now it is the best XP/resource cost. According to SOE all recipes should give XP at the rate of about 2x the resource cost. However, it seems that Chefs were left out of this for the time being because very few of our recipes actually follow this "rule".

Yay I got enough experience to get a box now! What tree should I go into?

While this is ultimately your opinion, I'll give you a few pointers.

If you want to start being able to make some decent money then you should probably go into the Mixology tree and get to Mixology II as soon as possible. Why is that? Two words: Tattooine Sunburn. Ironically even though it is only in the second level of Mixology, it is the strongest buff we can make, and actually the strongest buff in the game. Demand will vary by planet, but from what I have seen personally, the average sale price is around 500 cred each.

Now if you are tired of grinding on Wastril Bread and want something that can give you more XP you might want to consider the Entrees tree. In Entrees II you get a recipe called Stewed Gwouch and it gives around 100 XP per combine and it follows the 2x XP/resource rule. Another option is to go on up to Mixology III. There you get a recipe for Deuterium Pyro. It gives 100 XP for 45 resources, slightly better than Stewed Gwouch.

Ok, I am into this Chef profession now and I am wondering when do I get to experiment and what do I do?

Well, as you might have noticed there is another path up the Chef tree, the Cooking line. What this line does is increase your food assembly skill (so you don't fail so often) and it also gives you experimentation points. Each level gives a different amount of points, but by the time you get the 4th box you get 9 points to play with. I am assuming that since you came from the Artisan profession that you know how experimentation works in general. The three options you have to experiment with in the Chef profession are Flavor and Texture, Nutritional value, and Quantity.

Flavor and texture can increase the duration of the buff, Nutritional value can increase the actual value of the buff, and Quantity can increase the number of uses of the buff. Play around and make what you think the buff needs. I find that most customers of Tattooine Sunburn want more uses than anything because they are happy with the amount of the buff and the duration.

How do I know what makes food good?

If you look at your schematic you will see the stats that the raw materials have that will affect the particular aspect you are interested in. So for example if you had a schematic that had 33% Flavor, 33% Decay Resist, and 33% Potential Energy then you would want to find resources with high values for all of those. By doing this you increase the base amount that you can start experimenting from. Later on you might even be able to experiment the item to over 96% success giving you a pretty wicked buff.

What's up with Milk and Eggs? I have recipes that call for them, but I can't find them anywhere!

Unfortunately SOE had an oversight in beta and forgot to include ways for players to actively search for Milk and Eggs. So for the time being Milk and Eggs are only available as dropped items off of enemy NPC's. At the time of this writing a patch was supposed to fix this and make them harvestable.

What about factories? I heard that they can help us level?

Well there are three sides to the factory issue. One is that SOE recently nerfed factories to only give 10% of the XP the food would normally make. They used to give full XP, but some folks were buying and planting 5 and 6 factories to powerskill. The second issue is that food from factories is currently bugged.

The normal process for a factory is to make a schematic, load it into the factory, load the raw materials and turn it on. Then when it was done it would spit out crates of items for you to use. Well it does do this for us, BUT if you had experimented your schematic up so that you could get multiple uses out of the item to be made, the factory would eat that and the items would only come out with one use per.

The second bug is that no food produced in a factory will give UXP to the food creator (you)

What is UXP?

UXP stands for Usage or User (depends on who you ask) Experience. What it is is experience you get for someone using the item you created. So when a weaponsmith makes a gun and you go use it, that weaponsmith gets crafting experience. UXP can be equal to 1/2 of the experience granted for making the item. So if you make some bread and get 70 XP for it, if someone ate it all you'd get another 35 XP.

How does it work for Chefs?

It’s slightly different for Chefs in that the person has to eat your buff and all of the uses of that buff before we get UXP. So if you make an item with 5 uses you don't see UXP until after all 5 uses have been used. And no, you don't get UXP for eating your own food.

What is this "Optional Biological Component"?

They are components that you can choose to include in your recipe that will increase one or more stats of the food. You can get them from your friendly neighborhood Bio-Engineer.

That’s about all I can think of now, will update when needed.

What are the rules on UXP?

1. How far away can someone be, when they eat it, for you to still get UXP?

2. Do you have to be online?

The concept of UXP is that anytime anywhere someone uses your stuff, you get the XP even when you are offline. However, that has not been the case. It has been very buggy recently so that some folks say you have to be in sight range of the user, others say you have to be on the same planet, and even others aren't getting any at all. I look for SOE to fix this hopefully when they get to tinkering with the chef profession.

About UXP:

This is not just for the chef profession, several professions are having this problem. Holo said recently they found what is causing this bug, they are working on a fix but did not have an ETA. I think this was two weeks ago he said this.

Hmmmm....yeah....but....The mods don't want me to have more than two stickies at the same time and there are one or two other threads that I think should also go up there.

Thinking of combining them.

Nice overview.

I'd also like to add, don't always think you need harvestors. If you're a full Chef maintaning one is very diffficult (high cost). I only started using them AFTER I was able to Sunburns.

Also, there are a few other good foods that players will buy. I find that if I simply stick to a 4-5 item menu that covers almost all the attributes players are happy.
