Thread: Ranger Question for Chefs

Hello all,

(I apologize if this might be more appropriate for the trade forums...)

I've recently made the shift to the Ranger profession (and am greatly enjoying it) and have become quite the harvesting fool.

Along those line I've heard tales of selling Milk and Fish for fantastic prices...

But I haven't ran into anything like that yet at all.

Do Chefs really look out for Fish and Milk that much? Does it really demand such a premium?

I've personally found milking to be a little more immediate gratification than fishing, but I suppose either could be done on a regular basis if it was worth my time.

I spoke with one Master Chef on my server and he recommended pricing at 50 cpu, but at the same time said it wasn't always in high demand, but that in stacks of 5k or more it could be. Now, for 250k credits, I supposed I could milk for five or six hours straight (1k an hour seems achievable)

I guess I'm just wondering whether I'm spinning my wheels or not?

Thanks,
Steelraven on Ahazi

Well milk varies from server to server. I personally dont usually pay more then 20 Cpu for milk for the following reasons:

1) Stats dont matter when making Bantha Butter (the sub component that uses milk)

2) Blue Milk is not very popular on Tarquinas

I was wonder why a Ranger was asking chefs only ... BEs aren't worth the bother? Anyway, that's where the fish ends up, in Pet Stim-Ds. We use eggs too ... we have odd resource requirements for some things...

I buy as much milk as I can get.A few foods that need it like smugglers delight ( bantha butter ) sell very well to jedi and I get large stacks to give to my BE so she can make me flavor additives.

The least I pay for milk is 50cpu and for higher quality milk I'm willing to go higher. I do harvest it myself also, but only when I have time - that said I get about 5k per hour using veghash on dantooine milking pickets. There's a trick btw, milk the beast while it's alive, kill it, then use /harvest milk on its corpse. 1.5 times the milk and the same amount of work.

Fish - I've never used the stuff. It's not something that can't be replaced by a different component at a less labor intensive price for us chefs. I believe that BE's are a better target market for fish meat.

milk for the most part yes,fish...well its basicly meat,so unless it has great stats,no

1k an hour?!you msut be milking the smallest herbivores on the planet, unless theres nothing bigger, move up,i know creatures like fambaa on naboo fetch about 100 milk per,6 per lair, lets say five because theres always a baby it seems, two lairs, which takes about 5 miutes each to go through (maybe 10 or so if youre milking...) thats 1k milk in 20 minute,3k in that same hour...substitute fambaa for a big creature on whatever world youre milking on

On ahazi, either contact Bawlz, kelon or, err, I forget firbird's toon's ingame name. (merile maybe?). All 3 are big chef's on ahazi, and all 3 have no issue paying a minimum of 50 cpu for milk in large stacks. No chef I know of really cares about fish, cant get enough quanity of it to matter.

I have never tried but if they count as an organic you may be able to use them in some Artisan foods. Although since there is really nonoteworthy way to catch lots it would be a waste of time.

There should be Fishery harvestors ...hell we have starships. Fish should be another good source of meat for everyone in the game. Its a real shame they are not.

As mentioned above, Fish is really a BE needed resource for making Pet Stim D's. Before the major Creature Handler nerf, when everyone and their brother had a major pet, Pet Stim D's were very popular. On my server as a BE I could get Pet Stim D's to around 1,500 healing. Those sold well as everyone was using pets to tank. Now, it seems pets are not as popular. Pet Stim C's, which I can get to around 1,100 or 1,200 healing, as a good alternative and don't take fish. Getting large amounts of fish is insanely boring and not a good use of your time in my opinion.

Milk is something I use a lot of on my server and I pay well for it. The key here is large chunks. 5K, 10K, 20K. I would more likely pay 50 cpu for a 20K chunk than a 5K chunk..it lets me run full factory batches of additives like Bantha Butter which I can then use in Pikatta Pie, a huge seller on my server for Jedi (Dodge bonus of +55 with the stuffI make). If you get a good shift of milk in on a creature that drops a fair amount, then using the milk for Blue Milk production is a possibility. On my server I do sell a few crates of Blue Milk (Mind Healing) every week. The key is it needs to be above +600 on the Mind heal. But normally milk stats don't matter if your using it for bantha butter, which is probably 90% of the time.

With that said, your probably wasting your time to milk things. Assuming your a Ranger with another combat profession, and can actually kill things quickly, I think your best bet is harvesting Carnivore meat on Dathomir or Dantooine. Rancors are the ticket where in one buff session you should be able to harvest well over 100K of meat. Large chunks of meat like this are vital to BE's for chef additive, chefs, doctors, etc... Ifa good shift of Dath carnivore shifts in on your server.....harvest harvest harvest. I will even pay a doctor 100K to come out to Dathomir and rebuff me just before my buffs run out...so I can just keep harvesting. Get 500K or more of top quality carn meat....that is like 2 days work for a Ranger using Veghash (mine is +33 creature harest bonus) and a harvest droid with a bonus of at least 106.Set up a harvesting macro so that as you kill things your droid is just moving in to harvest.....while you keep aggro'd and killing. You can really get a huge chunk of meat fast.

You can auction that chunk off for well over 30 cpu, of course depending on the stats, but even junk on my server will sell for 10 - 15 cpu. That adds up fast in volume. Dath meat really bad? Go to Dantooine and pull Voritor Hunter missions...not as much volume but you can earn +30K cash per mission plus get a good supply of carn meat to sell later. All a better use of your time than harvesting milk or fish. It's one of the reasons both milk and fish are hard to come by. Milk is a great resource for noob scouts to harvest to ramp up scout and also earn some cash...but as a full blown Ranger, unless your other profession is Tailor or something, you should be out killing stuff and harvesting meat. A Ranger/TKA combo would have you very rich on my server.

Just my comments/opinion.

A hint from someone with a Master Ranger alt:

Everybody can milk a creature, as long as you have mask scent abilities. But there is also another way to get milk: by actually _harvesting_ it. This means killing the creature, and then getting the milk from the corpse (scary thought).

The point is: Milk doesn't show up on the radial menu, when harvesting. You have to use the appropriate command in spatial:

/harvest milk

The easiest way is to set up a macro with that command, and then bind it to a keyboard key.

One more difference between milking and harvesting: When harvesting milk, the amount you get depends on your current skills (modified by Veghash or other things). When milking creatures, you always get around 90% to 110% of what a person with +100 creature harvesting skills would get (=Master Ranger). So, someone with low harvesting skills might still prefer milking, but a (Master) Ranger should get more milk with harvesting (keep the Veghash bonus in mind!) in less time. You have to kill the creatures to get new spawns anyway. So, why chasing after some nervous fambaa for 20 seconds and then killing it, when killing it first and then getting the milk in an instant is much faster?

Doing Piket Plainswalker missions on Dantooine (alone, not in a solo hunting group, as it halves your harvesting yield), I can get around 10k of milk in _one_ hour.

While milk can sell for quite a bit, I always recommend to my hunters that they try Dath carnivore and any high quality insect meat. Insect meat is used for Vecupti and can bring a very high price and is easier to hunt. Dath carn can be used in bivoli and BE additives, and you can get an obscene amount in a short period of time. 100k at 20 cpu for carnivore meat is much better than 5k at 100 cpu for milk.
