Thread: How in the world do CHEFS make cash?
I'm not an actual Chef yet, but I have Domestic Arts IV and make food more than anything. I'm hoping that real CHEFS have more luck than I do. Because of the following reasons, how are we supposed to make cash:
1) With all of the great foraged goods and smugglers' spices, how can our foods compare?
2) There's not even a food category on the bazaar for our foods. People don't realize that they exist, especially newbs.
3) Food and Drink fill you up FAST. You can only eat/drink a few servings every 24 hours.
Anyway, with all of these negatives, #2 probably the most significant, how in the world do you guys sell any of your foods? I have several K-18 rations, all experimented, which heal for 80Constitution and 80 Willpower for FIVE servings for 3 minutes, and it's only 250. I recently got Totellnie Noodles (sp?) which heal 110+ Health and 110+ Willpower for FIVE, sometimes SIX servings, for 5 minutes...that goes for about 250 credits. Furthermore, Icreate Ruby Bilelswhich heal 80 Mind for seven minutes (5 servings)which go for about 190 credits.
And I sell maybe ONE of each, if that, every day, although I have probably 5 or 6 of each on the market. It's pathetic. Keep in mind that I'm in a fairly popular town (Moenia, Naboo), and I'm the only person creating chef food in town. I think that most people don't realize the benefits of food (#2 above) so they don't even look for it. For experienced players, they realize that foraged foods and spice (#1)are cheaper and more effective. And when you finally DO get somebody who wants to buy your food, he/she only buys one stack because they know that that's all they need before their stomach is full (#3).
How are we supposed to make a living? Consider the fact that most of our foods need expensive hides, meat, and/or bone, and it's quickly obvious that food is not a money-maker.
I'm suffering the same thing. Right now though I'm reciting my mantra "They'll wantfood one day" over and over and just getting on with setting myself up and hoping for the best.
Sure I have to do missions to fund my harvesters rather than just sell food, but I make sure I keep the bazaar stocked and every so often someone comes along and buys a huge chunk of it (presumably having found it by mistake under Misc). Most of my sales tend to be random passers by seeing the Chef tag under my name and saying "hey, can you make me something?" and I do my best to teach them the benefits of foods and that I take orders. Still never had a single order via email though :/
Right now I'm working on the Efficiency line of Merchant as well. That 20cr fee on the bazaar is a killer when the food sells for so little anyway.
The fact that spice blows our foods out of the waters is something I am concerned about however. That won't ever go away ![]()
Well.. so far actually selling foods as a buff item or on the bazaar doesn't really seem to get people too interested, but bartending work can be both fun and profitable. Spend a little time designing a consistant menu and deveoping a bartender persona. You can be the gruff big man behind the bar,the frustrated, high-class server, or a Tom Cruise "Cocktail" (I KNOW that will be edited) type. The Cantina patrons will appreciate it and you can make somefair /tips along with the money you make selling your food.
You won't get rich doing it, but you can make some reasonable money on the side.. especially if your working towards Novice Chef and selling Starshine Surprise and Jawa Beers.
That's why I became a Chef Ussen ![]()
My sole goal is to run a popular bar. I don't want to be rich, just to get by and be social ![]()
I've had no problem selling any of my foods in the marketplace. Every day when I log in all my food / drinks are gone, and I have to upload a whole new batch. I usually charge between 3 to 4 times the amount of total resources for the item. For example, Teltier Noodles needs 50 resources for one stack. I'd charge between 150-200 creds fora stack. I'm selling all my wares in Coronet, Corellia (the most popular city on my current planet). This just makes iteasier so people don't have to travel to a remote city, costing them extra creds.
I can keep my costs down since I survey while I'm hunting, and only buy really good deals on resources from the marketplace. I don't have to worry about harvesters, factories and such, but I'm guessing this might change in the future once I get higher in the chef tree.
The hardest part is getting the recognition that food/drink really helps. So I decided to hand out samples to everyone in hopes that they will see the benefits. I have visited cantinas and medical facilities handing out over 100 stacks of food to everyone. Ruby Bliel's and Teltier Noodles to medics, Jawa Beer and Dustcrepe to Entertainers, and K-18 Rations for all the combat types. Since I've been handing out items, I've had some people contact me directly wanting to place large orders.
It's all about informing the masses that chef food/drink = good
I'm also looking for a merchant who has a shop set up on Corellia to host some of my items. I have seen postings on Naboo and Tatooine for merchants asking chefs to drop by and offload their items. Any merchantson Corellia interested?
this is definitely making me *NOT* want to be a chef, even when i love the idea of cooking =(
i stood outside the starport the other day yelling "selling BEER", but noone responded. i haven't been making any money at all from food... i run destroy missions (with the built of an entertainer), feed my harvesters, and give my food out to friends for 10-50 credits. there must be a way i can actually support myself making food... or not =(
there's also the milk/egg problem. we can't harvest it like meat, and we can't buy it. i see plenty of mammal-like creatures around, can we either milk them alive, or shoot them dead and get milk? i would really like to try some jaar some day =)
At this point, i've tried so many different things and have sold so many different food items, that I know I'm not doing anything wrong. I keep the Bazaar loaded with Starshine Surprise, Tootlier Noodles, Ruby Bileil, and K-18 Rations (although Tootlier Noodles will take over K-18 soon). I would create Jawa Beer but Wooly Hide is not existant on Naboo, it seems.
I'm not a Scout, and I don't own any harvesters. So I have to buy the meat/hide from the bazaar for the ridicilous rip-off prices, and as a result, I have to sell my food items at about 200-250 (5 per stack).I have tried lowering it, but it generally doesn't matter. This economy is so crazy right now, that most players have TONS of money, so they'll buy anything they see if they like it, regardless of price. 250 sells almost just as well as 150, and I have to keep the prices at 250 in order to make a profit.
I have 20 items on the bazaar (of the ones listed above) every night. I log in, AT MOST, 3 are taken. I stay at Moenia, Naboo, which almost always has at least 40 people in the city at one time and countless more on the outskirts. There is even a house community just outside the city. Every time somebody buys one of my food items, I send them an email giving 20% off their next purchase (only once per player). I have spent HOURS shouting at the busiest place in Moenia about how foods help, and I have given away free samples, usually to friends.
I can sell a Black Leather Jacket, Black Shoulder Strap, Black Cargo Pants, Black Leather Boots, Black Leather Gloves, and a Black Belt, in 24 items...every single one of those clothing items, and they don't even have a tangible purpose! I do NOT want to be a tailor to survive in this game, although it seems to be the only plausible way to make money.
Furthermore, I have tried to be a bartender a few times. Doesn't work--infact the last time I did, the female dancers laughed at me.I didn't get ANY sales. If this were Anarchy Online--where the food and drink items actually appear in your hand, and there are visible animations for eating and drinking--I'm sure I would have sold every drink as a bartender. But, unfortunately, this isn't Anarchy Online.

Typo, sorry.
4th Paragraph should read "in 24 hours."
And the first sentence should read: "At this point, I've tried so many different things and have TRIED to sell many different food items."
I have been hanging out at the cantina to make ANY kind of sale. The bazaar isnt pulling in a whole lot for me.
It took me 6 hours to make 500 creds in the cantina, and I felt like an idiot, because every 4 minutes I'm shouting:
"Get your Refreshements here"
"I got beer"
And you are right people do laugh at you.
And I only charge about 50 credits per stack since noone will take it for anymore.
I notice even the dancers, who are exhausted from dancing, would rather sit down for 10 minutes to regain stats, then by 30 creds worth of anything from me.
