Which is better a speed sliced or damage sliced Nym's carbine?

Only time it matters is when your character with a specific weapon and specific special attack are already hitting the 1.0 Speed Cap. In that case a speed slice is a complete waste and has no effect, otherwise they are basically equal. 35% slice to speed is basically the same DPS as a 35% to damage.

BTW, only use Nym's Carbine in the Marksman tree before the DXR6 Cert and as a trophy on the wall.

Pardon a rifleman for stepping in here but thats not exactly true...

Lets say your speed mod is +50 for argument sake.

Since I am in fact a rifleman, and currently don't have any carbines on me, I'll use one of my guns as an example, though the same would hold true for any other gun as well

T21 unsliced 169-399 @ 7.5

T21 with 35% speed slice:

new speed = old speed*(1 - .35) = 7.5 * 0.65 = 4.9 (rounded up)

So new stats are 169-399 @ 4.9

T21 with 35% damage slice:

new damage = old damage * (1 + .35) = 169-399 * 1.35 = 228-538 (rounded down)

So new stats are 288-538 @ 7.5

Now to see which is better we have to calculate average damage per second (DPS). This is based on a the average damage done by the weapon divided by your speed.

The original gun average damage is 426, with the attack speed modifier your attack speed is 3.75, for an average DPS of 113.6

The damage sliced gun has an average damage of 575, attack speed is still 3.75, and average DPS is now 153.4

The speed sliced gun maintains an average damage of 426, attack speed drops to 2.44, and DPS is now 174.8

So for the same slice %, the speed slice increases DPS by an additional almost 14%.

To make matters worse speed slices can reach 40% for an average DPS of 189.3 for a total increase in DPS by a little over 23% than the best a damage slice can do.

In short, unless you have 95+ (for me MRM + M Marksman, for you M Carbine + BH)speed modifiers so you are always shooting at your speed cap regardless of the special you do. Your DPS will almost always be better with a speed slice (and possibly a speed powerup)

There may be situations where increased damage my be desireable, such as in PvE where your first 3 shots are free if you're prone, so in this case use a damage sliced damage powered up gun to make those 3 shots count then switch to your speed gun to finish them off faster.

You are absolutely right, I had forgotten that I actually calculated it once too. Logic says 35% is 35% no matter where it is, but that is not the case.

A 35% speed slice is an actual 53.9% DPS increase and a 35% damage slice is an actual 35% DPS increase above the unsliced weapon. The difference between the slicesis 14% more DPS in speed than damage slices (before hitting the cap) but it is actually an 18.9% improvement when looking at the base weapon as the reference point.

Thanks for the clarification, /bonk self I know better as I always use speed powerups until I hit the cap.

BTW, my Carbine Speed is +85 without any BH so a pure Carbineer can hit the speed cap as well

But the real point I wanted to make, unless you are in Marksman Carbines, don't bother with the Nym's Carbine, get a DXR6.

Don't beat yourself up too bad. I used to think the same thing until I did the numbers myself too. You would THINK that they would be at least equal if not damage being better as speed slices can go to a higher %, but its just not the case...

If you're not shooting at the cap, you're shooting too slow

Get yourself a Krayted DXR6 rifle with a form fitted stock.

Hope for a damage slice, and you'll be killing mobs left and right

I truly wish i could find a krayted DXR6 but after a week of a better gun than my 33% dam Nym, I haven't found one available on starsider.

I have posted on the forums and gone to every master WS that people recommend and the stats are always something like 110ish-175ish at 3.8 or so with truely prohibitive HAM numbers. I have sliced 18 this week and the DPS is close, but not as good.
Every DXR6 has the same light AP acid attack and less DPS than the Nym's. Not sure why people are advising to hang the Nym on the wall if you are at least Novice, for me, the math says to stick with it untill I can find a stocked/krayted one.

I totally agree with you, BothanMaestro. Every DXR6carbine is worse than my Nym's. I'm even planning to stock a few (well, 10, to be exact) spare nym's carbines just to make sure I don't run out. Such a great prize for such an easy theme park.

From my experience and everything I have heard to this point, the DXR6 is better than Nym's but each server is probably different.

Although I am a little biased since I have some of the best weapons on my server, for Carbineers that is.
