Thread: Why speed slices are bad

Got a nice speed slice on my krayt laser, one of the best Carbines I've ever seen on Sunrunner since launch. I'm not a loot whore so I don't often go looking for the best scales and I don't have the funds to buy any of the top 5 carbines on the server either. But what I found from my speed sliced laser is that the condition drops faster, it uses more ham, and does less damage per shot than my last laser carbine. On top of that, it limits my expandability now that I'm actually coming into some speed tapes from my guildmates. It has a 1.9 speed and I'm already capped with it at 82 carbine speed. I've always liked the damage slices better, and can never seem to get one when I have the greatest need for it. I'll take the 3.2 speed laser with 100-600 damage any day over a 1.9 70-450.

In your case, consider yourself lucky that you got a speed slice, my friend.

Speedcapping a 3.2 speed weapon requires 88 Carbine Speed, and you've only got 82. The reason you believe your Carbine may in fact be draining your HAM faster is most likely due to the fact that you're firing it faster, which also explains the added condition loss. If you look at the numbers, they look a little like:

3.2 100-600:

MAX DPS:1925 PvE: 2887.5 PvP: 601.5 PvP&Mit3: 468.75

1.9 70-450:

MAX DPS:1950 PvE:2925 PvP: 609.4 PvP&Mit3: 342.2

As can be seen, the speed-sliced surpasses it's damage-sliced counterpart in all aspects except the case where you're going up against a PvPer with Ranged Mitigation 3. Considering most PvPers are now mostly melee builds because of Jedi and there are actually few Riflemen, fewer Pistoleers and even fewer Carbineers, it's not something to immediately worry about too much.

Personally, I'd even rather be able to dish out less damage in PvP and be able to inflict states and KDs at a faster rate, since our damage isn't by any means fantastic on the whole anyway.

Speed-slices can be good.

This is why i wish they would make it where you couldn't speed cap without skill tapes and a speed slice.

I always dreaded slicing really nice weapons and getting a speed slice when I was a smuggler.

Thats why i always prayed to the slicing gods. As weird as it sounds i swear i got better slices when i did that.

As a smuggler, yeah, it's probably a lot of stress when you're not sure if you'll speed-slice and 'wreck' a weapon or not.

But for a simple Master Carbineer, 95% of weapons should be speed-sliced for better DPS. The only exception is ifa player is using amazing krayt tissue AND posesses speed attachments, at which point, then and only then would a damage-slice be worthwhile.

Of course this doesn't apply to BH/Carbineers, but even then.. certain professions like Commando and Carbineer and often even Pistoleer require decent speed-slices to maximize damage output.

I believe the same, you can always cap your speed, damage is always better. Try going up the BH tree for more speed and mods and a couple good shots there too...
