I've always liked carbines, but I've stayed away from them until now because of the massive HAM costs (I'm a casual MCH who is unbuffed 99% of the time). Other professions, such as rifleman, can use certain foods and drink to negate HAM usage. Can the same be done with carbineer or are buffs pretty much required to compete?

Similar food/drink exist for all HAM pools.....
And the costs to Carbineer are not that much more than Rifleman really.....
Personally out of ease of fighting I was almost always buffed when MCH, but to each his own. With CH you don't HAVE to be buffed, but I liked taking down ER's in 20 seconds

You can be very effective without the buffs but you will get into trouble if your fighting style relies on massive spam hehe. I however saw in theed a none buffed carbineer taking down 1 MBH, 1 fencer/tkm armored and buffed... Of course, he was using a krayt carbine but still... I think it's a good exemple to all

Kiwik Swirls, Won wons, Neutron Pixie, Brandy and Ahrisa will become your friends, along with a healthy dose of Medic. Vagnerian Canape and Citrus Snowcake are nice for those situations where you need a different balance.
I've beaten a few very shocked composite tanks without buffs, so its not impossible, just one helluva challenge. Personally, I like challenges.

I regularly do PvE unbuffed, 2 brandies and a lot of stim c's. This works good on most tatooine MOBs, and faction/bh NPC's up to lvl 25. I only wear some armor, mainly a chest piece, so that helps alot, and choose your specials carefully!

There are very few professions that can actually do combat without specials and be slightly effective. Carbineer is like that, Swordsman is like that, TK is like that. All you gotta do is wear a good chestplate and use specials every once-in-a-while, and you can take down normal Mobs

If you mean just Doc buffs, a BoH can cut all HAM costs by about half, good ones for about 66%, although only for 5 - 7 minutes they're good in a surprise attack against some tough enemies.

Sorry, I should clarify that I'm focused completely on PvE (at least until after the CB... the GCW is pretty much non-existant right now). Like I mentioned I'm a Master Creature Handler so my pets pull tanking duty. I currently don't get to play for long periods of time, so I'm never doctor buffed. I always carry food and drink though.
Is carbineer a good choice for me or should I stick with rifle?

I do it all the time with my Radiant toon, infact I haven't even bought a single buff yet with him. And I wear Tantal armor once in a while and also have composite which I eat food/drink to equip. I have an Elite that eats 274 ham per special so I rarely ever use it but it IS possible with the proper use of specials as well as traps from scouting- in PVE I normally use actionshot1 to lower their posture or warning shot to keep their distance and use fullautosingle2 and chargeshot.

here is a solution to your HAM prob: find a good wepsmith that makes both stocked versions and non-stocked versions and get a DH17 snub no stock, costs on mine are H-24 A-27 M-14. Downside of this op is that DH is AP 0 so to higher lvl mobs you would do little damage, but if you use it only to hunt the lesser mobs and save things like krayts and NS to going with a true tank (TKA/Fencer/Swordsman), you can do just dandy unbuffed if your stats are mitted for unbuffed play. Just a thought.

Yeah, non-stocked Carbines will seriously help a non-buffed Carbineer.

currently i am playing a combat medic / carbineer and a creature handler / swordsman. i play both characters unbuffed 90% of the time. i am seriously considering changing my creature handler's weapon to a carbine as well. with my pets out there to tank, i can take carefully planed shots at the baddie and not have to worry about my HAM all that much. you can do PLENTY of damage, and also assist your pets in thier fight by using posture change / status attacks with your carbine.
as a combat medic / carbineer, i use stacked DOTs from cm to help keep me from feeling like i need to spam specials with my carbine. as a creature handler, i would use my pet's tank ability to its fullest while i stood back and made the baddies flop on the ground like fish...shot in a barrel
okay, okay you talked me into it. i will change to carbine for my CH as wel
