noob question here. i'm new to the game, so treat me gently.
looking at the skill boxes, it occured to me that i might combine fencer with carbines, thereby adding melee and specifically dodge defences to my carbineers skills. however, i was told by a player that the dodge from the fencing skills will only work when i have a one handed weapon in hand, and not with a carbine. is this correct? and why should that be the case?
i then figured i should go with swordsman to add melee defense and extra counterattack - does this seem sensible?
any help gratefully appreciated.

For the most part the person who gave you the advice is right. If you are trying to increase your defenses, there are only certain defenses that you can "stack" oruse no matter what combat profession you are. These defenses are:
Ranged / Melee Defense
Ranged and Melee Mitigation 1-2-3
Defense Versus States (Knockdown, posture change, blind, dizzy, intimidate etc)
Rifleman and Pikeman each get block (which reduces damage of attacks when the attack is "blocked")
Fencers and Pistoleers get Dodge (which makes an attack miss completely, no damage done at all)
Carbineers and Swordsman get Coutnerattack (not too sure about this defense myself, even though I used to be a master carbineer on another server. I'm pretty sure currently it acts as a dodge like defense)
Teras Kasi Artists have Defense Acuity (Defense Acuity is a combination of all the defenses, Block Dodge and Counter Attack, and a Teras Kasi artist with high defense Acuity has a greater chance to use all the defenses and either block dodge or coutner attack an attack done to them.)
The defenses here are capped at 125, and so is Melee and Ranged defense. So...if I was a master fencer and I wanted to have maximum dodge, I would only need 1XXX pistoleer to max out my dodge skill.
And yes, defense of a specific class is activated upon what type of weapon you have equipped. If you are a Master Carbineer and Master Fencer and you are holding a Gafi Baton, you will not coutner attack. This was implemented to maintain a degree of fairness and balence in the game. Why should you actively use the main defense of two classes at once when you are only fighting as ONE class at any specific time? I could see if it were possible to shoot with a carbine and swing at someone with a melee weapon at the same time, LOL, but thats just not possible so chose which weapon you use wisely.

Added note for above info - ranged and melee mitigation only work if you respectively are using a range or melee weapon yourself. Also, mitigation does not stack upon itself, i.e. having two Melee Mitigation 1's does not give you Melee Mitigation 2.

Your Sure about this?
I've always heard that Mitigation Doesn't matter what type of weapon your holding... (ie. Smuggler has both ranged and melee mit.)

Disregard this, it is false information. As long as you have the skill, you get the mitigation no matter what weapon you are holding.
