Well it really depends on your opinion of fun. Commando's get lots of interesting weapons, carbineers get lots of interesting specials. With your medic skills, Commando would basically mean getting bumped down to novice medic with one additional skill box. However with carbineer you would have enough for 3 alsmost 4 trees of medic.

What i suggest is try both, i would reccomend doing carbineer first since it would involve dropping less medic skills. The key thing to remember is that you are free to change your template at anytime. If you are doing something you don't like then try something new.

Having been a Commando and a Carbineer, I'll give you the breakdown from my recollections. Personally, Commando was nice, high damage, lotsa carnage from the weapon effects, and being that this was pre-DOT nerf, very well paying. You could almost max out your missions without a solo group and whatever your flamethrower couldn't cook, your Acid Rifle could handle (pretty much, a few exceptions). Your Launcher Pistol gave you an edge with heavy emplacements and AT-STs. The downer was, Commando is very much a one trick pony with each weapon. You plowed your way to the Cone2 special and spammed it. It got old real quick in terms of strategy in gameplay.

Carbineer, ironically, is built around pretty much the same damage types as Commando in terms of our best weapons. We have an excellent Acid carbine and a serviceable Heat Carbine. The exception being we have ourlow levelweapons built around Energydamage, resistance to which is common as hell. Shot per shot, it does not hit as hard as Commando weapons, but there are situations where you will find almost every special has a purpose in combat. Its more for a player who looks for longer battles and doesn't mind taking a risk for additional challenges.

As mentioned, its also MUCH easier on the Skill Point use, so you can diversify with support professions without sacrificing combat ability.

Its a question of taste, really. If your looking for a PvE body count, Commando's your gig. If playing the game is more important than beating it, then Carbineer's your bag.

Carbineers are more potent by far than current Commandos. This may and probably will change with the Combat Balance, but you'll do better both in general PvE and PvP as a Carbineer.

Carbineer is the most fun I've had in combat. There's actually (/gasp) tactics. I think Janu pretty much summed it up right there.
