From the FAQ,
The professions in SWG are really defined by their strengths and weaknesses. For Carbineer, they are:
Strengths:
- Excellent variety of Specials with equally great utility.
- All of the Carbineer Specials but maybe one or two have a useful purpose.
- Numerous State attacks which are very important, both in PvE and PvP.
- Wide selection ofCone Effect/Multi-Target attacks.
- Access to one of the best all-around weapons in the game: Laser Carbine.
- Very strong in low- to mid-level PvE content.
- Awesome titles. Perhaps some of the best in the game.
Weaknesses:
- Very highHAM costs.
- Slowest of the 3 Ranged classes.
- Damage types available (energy, acid and heat) are common and highly resisted. Many high-end targets are immune to these damage types.
- State effects are not applied to high-end mobs removing any distinction or contribution to high-end content.
- Very weak in high-end content.
- Low defenses. Among the worst of the elite combat classes.
- Main defensive skill, Counterattack, is broken. It does not "trigger" often and does not "counter" the attack.
- Very poor PvP performance because of low damage, slow speed, high HAM, and easily resisted damage types.

i became a carbineer because, first i was a swordsman, and i wanted a ranged profession to compliment my melee side. so, since both carbineers and swordsmen get a 'counterattack' skill mod, i figured it would be a good choice. i don't pvp much, so i just wanted to be able to shoot down the odd npc or critter that ran away before i could administer the coup de grace. one more thing: after i got the ranged mitigation 3 from mastering carbineer, i was able to solo at-sts

Because after you dizzy someone then double suppression fire them you can toy with them while they lay helpless on the ground. If its a rifleman stand directly on top of there prone toon for even more gratification while you blast away!
I wish I had a posture up attack so I could toggle my targets from prone to kneeling and back just for the fun of it.
