I'm in the process of changing templates. For about 3 months or so now I've been focusing on melee professions. When I first started the game, I was a Weaponsmith/Rifleman. Currently, I'm going to master Creature Handler for fun and then getting up to Tracking III in Ranger. This leaves me enough points for exactly one combat profession. (other than BH or Commando)

I want to do a ranged profession again, and was considering Carbineer. I'm hesitating though, because I'm not sure if Carbineer is effective stand-alone or whether it needs the BH Carbine mods. I know Rifleman is effective by itself, but I've already done it, and kinda rather do something else.

Thanks for any input.

Well first of all, what do YOU want to do. CH/Ranger/MCarb isn't the strongest profession in pvp or pve. I myself have been ranger for quite some time and decided to pick up ch and carbineer. Let me put it this way, it's real fun if it's your thing. It will take more time to kill stuff and it will take some strategy. But once you'll get the hang of it, you don't want to drop it anymore.
CH and carbineer complement eachother because both creatures and carbineers can stick alot of status effects.
Ranger will be helpfull in finding the more rare babies and can be quite handy in tracking prey for resoursces. Also the creature knowledge given by the ranger is a must for CH (a ch can't see CL which is a pain in the ass).
When you're going to start try looking for a be'd lvl 10 pet, they are far better than any wild creature of the equivalent level. Also be'd clothing for mask scent/taming is very handy to have around.
Also when looking at pets, try to find specials with intimidate, stun or blind. They give your pets much more staying power. Poisons and diseases aren't that good.

Personally I almost never use my carbineeer specials. My pets tank quite good so I can just finish them off without spamming cripple shot or whatever. Use an occisional full auto single 2 to apply more status effects. This will also mean that buffs aren't really important. I never use buffs or armor, and with a bit of practise you can to. That's what i think is cool about a template like this, it's very minimal in requirments.

As far as Carbines being effective without BH Skill mods is concerned. There is going to be a large difference. The +25 in Speed tapes is almost required to be able to excel as a carbineer without BH mods. There is a pretty detailed write up of speed in the FAQ, that is really where you take the hit for not having BH or the SEA's. Take a look it is really very informative. There is also a guide to Carbine SEA's as well. Should be able to answer most of your questions there. But the lowdown is that with just carbineer eventually you are going to want the +25.

As far as the specials in the two proffessions are concerned. Personally i feel carbineer compliments CH much better than rifleman would. With CH you have the advantage that most if not all the mobs you are engaging will be clumped around your pets. So that leaves them very open to AoE attacks which as a carbineer you will have plenty. You will have access to a more diverse range of AoE specials which would be make you are more effective at PvE. You will have several AoE specials capable of KDing, Blinc/Dizzy/Stun, Posture Down, Action Bleeding.

Actually having CH with Carbineer means you DO NOT have to have BH 0400 or SEA's.....the pets give you plenty of time to kill without being speed capped.

Personally, I don't know if I can ever give up my Carbineer/CH template.....but it isn't for everybody either and the great thing about SWG is that you can try it and if you don't like it, drop it and pickup another prof.

I never tried CH myself, but you seem to enjoy it so I might have to give it a try myself

Actually I was MCH then dropped it to do some holo profs. I missed it so much I had to get it back and went to 0444 CH because I found lower level BE pets (22,22,21) with 10k Health, Light Armor, 55%+ Kinetic Resists.

Having 2 of those pets out at once, easily tanked a GDK without them even being buffed

Wow, I had no idea so many people liked the template I was going for, lol. At least I'm on Starsider, so we don't have any clones on the same server.

Oh, and thanks for the info everyone.

Actually I hated CH while I was an Architect/Artisan/Marksman, but when I started to level up in Carbineer seriously I found that unlike Melee and Pistoleer that I needed a TANK. At first I borrowed pets from 3 other CH's which was UBER tanking with 6-7 pets at my command

And that hooked me....for Carbineer in PvE I just haven't found another prof to equal CH when using Carbineer as the sole offensive power.....and I have played all but 7 of 33.
