Thread: Need advice on how to spend skill points

I'm a master doctor and I like to dabble into the carbineer profession. At one point, I was a 0/4/0/0 carbineer and, although I enjoyed the power of crippling shot, the slow rate of fire was a real killer. I gave up carbineer to become a combat medic, but, alas, didn't like CM much so now I'm looking to go back into carbineer. I have around 25 skill points to spend (I can squeeze up to 29 if I give up some scout skills). What I'm wondering is what would be the best skills to acquire knowing that I'll never reach master status. (Also, to get these 25 points, I'm planning on surrendering the Ranged Weapon Support line in Marksman (I'll miss Warning Shot, but that's about it).

So, with 25 points to spend, I'm considering becoming a 3/3/0/0 carbineer. I figure that will get me the extra speed to be able to use crippling shot more effectively. However, the speed line has some skills of its own - namely, scatter shot and wild shot. I've never progressed up that line before so I was just wondering if those skills are any good. If Wild Shot 2 is worth getting, I can surrender a level of hunting and become a 4/4/0/0 carbineer.

What are your thoughts? Is this the best way to sample Carbineer, given my situation? (By the way, I almost never PvP, this is an almost strictly PvE character.) Or would it be better to climb a different tree or two entirely?

Thanks.

Well I would definitely do the speed tree, then honestly I would get at least the first box of counterinsurgency to get burstshot, I use that much more often than cripple etc. I got the next box for the resists but mileage may vary. The carbine special abilities are pretty good, though chargeshot 2 isn't fixed yet but I also hate the penalty of accuracy while moving so those modifiers were worth getting for me.

In your opinion, is burst shot more useful than crippling shot? With only a limited number of skill points to spend, I want to focus my attention on a couple trees as spreading your points over many trees is awfully expensive. If I'm going to get burst shot, I think I might shy away from the accuracy tree entirely, which means no crippling shot. It seems to me that going up the speed tree seems like a rather important one.

It's just the other 3 lines that really have me puzzled. I don't know which one would be best. Anyone else have any more ideas?

Due to our high HAM costs, I suggest you go up marksman boxes. I think if Im going to waste a special it better hit my target.

I suppose the right boxes to pursue would depend on what makes the game fun for you.

From what I can see carbineers can be broken up into several schools of thought:

1) Go for max damage:

These

2) Go for specials

3) Build for PvP

From what I can see carbineers can be broken up into several schools of thought:

1) Go for max damage:

Very offense minded. In any given situation your answer to a threat is simple, take the biggest chunk out of somethings HAM bar per shot. You might do well to pick up burstshot and put the rest into marksmanship (for accuracy and crippleshot), and speed (mainly for the speed bonus).

2) Go for specials:

More defensive. You prefer to be the 'swiss army knife', have something fancy for every occasion. Mob with a little mind bar? Scattershot. Something bigabout to chomp on your?Knockdown/w chargeshot. Need to cover a hasty retreat? AoE posture-down/knockdown. If that sounds like your gig thenspreading yourself out a bitin every branch would probably keep you happiest. For sure you won't have the most absolute uber anything, but your power will come in versatility.

3) Build for PvP

Kill people. Kill people. Kill people. Get marksman 3 for crippleshot and accuracy, carbine special 2 for knockdown, throw the rest into the speed line for scattershot and what speed you can get.
