It depends on your PvP style, heh.
Yes, Carbineer is more of a "support" profession in large PvP. Sadly, 90% of people I've met who have picked up Carbineer because of this end up using the 'non-support' specials, run ahead and try to damage, realize they have no defenses and can't damage, and get killed.
Our specials all emphasize on states. Furthermore, being a Master Carbineer is all about SPEED instead of damage. It's all about being able to target someone, inflict your dizzy and KD, and move on.. especially in group PvP.
That said, Master Carbineer alone is simply not up there PvP-wise unless you spend time and money and invest in great carbines and SEAs. You'd be much better off as a TK/Doc if you wanted to play a 'support tank' role, for example.
But if you mix Carbineer with something like BH or go for the defense/melee doubling (ie, adding Fencer/TK/Pistol defenses), then Carbineer starts to shine. There are a lot of threads on this forum recently about Carbineer mixes, so definitely check those out.
That said, I pretty much "support" PvP daily with the best Imperial PvPguild on Starsider. I'm Master Carbineer/Master Fencer, which means that I effectively do little damage. Still, our group can't live without aCarbineer. I'm the only one who caninflict ablind/stun/dizzy at a ranged distance, and I'm the only one whocan dizzy/KDsomeone who is running away orkiting the group. In group PvP encounters, I'll eitherequip a carbine and run around intimidating people.. but if things get sticky andJedi are involved, I'll go into Fencer mode and just tank them - Jedidon't hurt me much.
Do Idealsignificant damage? Yes, with my Stun Baton. With myCarbines? Not often, no, butI do keep them on the floor so that my groupmates can finish them off within seconds. But that's howI choose to play the game - it's notfor everyone.
Group PvP is hard to find on mostservers, and simply riding off the "Master Carbineer is a support profession" argumentis somewhat misleading. But Carbineer is by far the coolest and funnest ranged profession you can pick up.
[added] SuppressionFire2 isn't actually the best 'controlling' special you can use. Most Carbineers rely on a variety of specials, including ActionShot2 to posture down, ChargeShot to KD, and the FullAuto series to dizzy/blind/stun. WildShot / Legshot2 are also useful for stuns. SuppressionFire2 works.. but.. perhaps not as well as the others.

Carbineer rocks in pvp if you remember to stay back and let the melees tank.
Keep laying down blankets of BurstFire2, FAA2, ChargeShot2 and ActionShot2 and watch the body count rise.
Try and go alone and you'll die fast.

A friend of mine told me carbineer was a good profession for PvP because of the CMs you get Suppression Fire 2. I have been using it in PvP for a while and find it to be an O.K. support class, what do you guys think?
