Thread: Defenses to complement PvP carbineering?

So I've got Master Carbineer and BH 4400, which leaves me with 47 skill points to apply towards another prof in order to get some real defenses, since I'll be working exclusively with carbines. Seems to me that the only two profs that are worth my time are pistoleer and fencer. Here's a chart of the defenses each has to offer:


Defense vs PistoleerFencer

Blind 4010

Dizzy 40 10

Intimidate ---- 10

Stun 40 -----

Posture 20 20

KD50 20


Red is the technique tree, blue is the footwork tree. I can only do one of those trees if I go Fencer,due to SP limitations.


So which do I do? It would seem at first glance that Pistoleer has far more defenses, but then I remember that I could come up with KD and dizzy defense using food and drink, and stun and blind aren't a particularly big deal in PvP (correct me if I'm wrong). Both profs are equal in Posture defense.


Plus, Fencer not only has some precious defense against Intimidate, but Melee Damage Mitigation 2, which might come in handy. Then again, going the pistoleer route would net me +40 in melee defense...would that make up for MDM2?


So considering that I'm rather new to PvP, I figured I'd come here and get some advice. Which defenses would you go for, the pistoleer or fencer?

Hmmm.. Tough choice. The fencer template hes less defenses but will provide you with Melee mitigation 2. However, lightsabers have a very close min/max damage, so mitigation would not be too effective. With pistol tech 4, you have some more sturdy state defenses, and some +10 to stun,dizzy, and intimidate for being zabrak. (BTW, def. vs intimidate is broken). That'll also put you at +65 vs. KD, but that still isn't enough. I'd recommend getting pistol tech 4, then decide if you want novice brawler for warcry/intimidate, or some medic skills for stimpack C's. Make sure when you fight jedi to take 45% synth steak, and anti-kd food. (can't think of the name, real tired right now).

I can tell you from experience that Pistoleer works very well if you plan on exclusively doing PvE, rather than PvP. In fact, Pistoleer works better than Fencer (as a Carbineer, of course) for most defenses in PvP too, with the exception of melee damage mitigation. As you may know, the noble corp of Carbineers are not known for their PvP prowess. With that being said, I recommend Pistoleer over Fencer. Before the Devs fixed the solo group cash cow, I was doing Janta missions exclusively. Those Jantas usually put a world of hurt on people, but Pistoleer defenses, Composite Armor, Food, and both Mind and Doc buffs kept me alive and well. Don't get me wrong - Fencer defense rules, but I feel that Pistoleer works better. Plus, if you get to Pistoleer 0/0/2/0, you can use a Geo Stun Pistol. That will work well for close-up PvP. However, Fencer lets you do kinetic damage against Nightsister protectors, so that is also a plus.


Truly, your best defense is your +190 Carbine Accuracy. Kill them before you kill yourself. You, as a Carbineer, are your own worst enemy. You will do more damage to yourself with specials than most of your PvE enemies. And you will probably lose to TKAs and other Melee types in PvP until the combat system change. There are very few creatures that you will not be able to take out by yourself (and with little effort). Krayts, Tusken Executioners, and Nightsister Elders, for example, will kill you if you solo them, no matter what your defense isor whether you are a Pistoleer or Fencer.

WIth BH you choose offense over defense as 47 Skill Points is nowhere near enough defense for PvP.

Bite the bullet and go offensive, with def stacking in my experience, it's more of an all or none thing......


That said, you dont have to master carbineer. 1400 and BH 0400 Carbs would be sufficient for offense if you're poor. IF you wanna hunt jedi, I'd suggest going up tkm instead if that's your main goal.


If you really do want defenses, I'd drop investigation and take up my poor man's template.


0400 BH

1404/3421 (or 3420, I forget)

0040 Pistoleer

0440 Fencer


Should be good enough state defenses......................

Exactly.. sadly, these defenses are not enough for PvP. Here's why:


BH 4400/M.Carbs, Pistoleer 0040 with 27 skill points:


Blind: 40, Dizzy: 40, Intimidate: 25, Knockdown: 65, Posture Change: 20, Stun: 40. Ranged: 42, Melee: 2. In order for you to resist the following states in PvP, they MUST be in the 75-80 range, simply because specials are that strong.


With 95 defense vs. Dizzy, for example, a Pikeman guildmate of mine dizzied me in1 hit, and aTK dizzied me in 3.. and I hada Stun baton in-handand CenterOfBeing going!


This is a recurring problem with the Bounty Hunter and Carbineer professions - neither of them have enough defenses to even "survive" as far as PvP is concerned. If you become a target, you will get stun/dizzied/blinded and knocked down rather fast.


It sucks, and I hate to admit it, but I was in the same boat as you.


My suggestion is to go Medic 0040 at the minimum (Pharmacology 4) which will allow you to use Med use 40 Stim Es. This should allow you to heal yourself between 1500 to 1900 damage in a single hit!


You'll have 18 skill points left, which you can spend on more Medic, or swap between Novice Brawler whenever you PvP or even Novice Artisan if you wish to Survey for resources. You could actually even cut back on some of the Medic skills and spend the skillpoints somewhere else.. wherever you choose, but again, neither the Fencer nor the Pistoleer options you listed would give you much of an edge.


In order to properly defense stack (to notice an effect), you must couple atleast two of Pistoleer, Fencer and TK.

i guess ill throw out my opinion cuz it hasnt been put yet

ive played all these proffesions, and fought many jedi...duno how i stack up tothe other guys but im not a nub


i would do master carbs/bh 3400 (only need 3 for jedi)

i would then do novice brawler...cuz lately, jedi dont know what intim you are using, 1 or 2...most jedi will spam heal on themselves when intimidated, so u waste tons of their force spamming it...i like nov brawler for the warcry too...u ever need to switch weps, u justwarcry, then switch weps and u can even stack another intim on him, cuz they cant attack until attacked...


for the rest of the sp u have, i would do medic 1140...this gives u stim E's which will heal u completely, and i dont ever see jedi use 1hand sabers anymore so they target health...this would mean that they are spamming on u, all u do is take kd food and hope u can stand up if they posture change u...u can healurself for 2k+, and stack the mindfood (mindbuffs, brandy, sometimes ahrisa/canape) and then vercupti if u need it...with decent buffs this will put u at 5k health with a pixy, which u can heal in 2-3 shots...


do whatever u want tho, i really dont care about state def. in my templates cuz i dont think they work unless u uberstack them + attachments or food... g/l whatever u choose


and stun and blind really suck to have on u in pvp...ur acc goes down tons

Master BH for the title. Carbines 0/4/0/4 for crippleshot, accuracy, and the area KD's. Pistols 0/0/4/1 for the extra defense and a bit of speed. And of course novice medic 1/0/0/0 for the heals.


This is still an offensive template although the pistol state defenses will still help. The only thing I'm losing out on is the DE-10 but I dont see it as a major loss. I could give up medic and work up some more carbine but heals are too important for me to give up.


For PvE this is a great template.

For PvP its a not too bad template

For Jedi its a decent template

Nothing wrong with this for sure


Nothing wrong with being a SEA/Carbineer with Defense Stacking either


But trying to split between offense and defense is where the problem comes from.....a "Jack of all Trades but Master of None" in SWG gets you /clone in a hurry

My current template (going back to BH / Carbs from Doc / MCM):


BH 0-4-0-0; Carbs 2-4-0-3; Novice Doctor



If I remember right, this is 95 speed, 170 accuracy, andno defenses. BUT, I can cure states. Being a human with max mind stats doesn't hurt either.


I will drop this after I cap carb xp again, but it has been a fun few days.

My (main toon's) template is MCarb, 0440 BH, 3044 Pistoleer. 0 skill points left. My worst enemy is the damned weapon switch delay. Pretty much pure offense with a little defense andBE'd stun def clothes.

my current template is master carbineer,BH 0-4-0-0,and TKA 4-3-0-0 leaving me with no skillpoints (yes i am (or was) a TKM,for about 10 months infact (first 4 or 5 i was playing was rifles) so it was before the TKM whorage,before half the population was TKM..) i jsut cant give meditation up,precious wound healing,no begging docs to heal my wounds,plus the balance tree gives me melee mitigation 2,def vs posture change 30,def vs blind 10,combat equilibrium 30,15 def vs stun,5 to dizzy and 20 to KD (not much but like i said,i jsut cant give up meditation) good site to look at all the mods without going in-game is this
