I've picked up Master Carbineer to go along with my Master Commando...

Seems like a fun prof, as I've never done it before, even preCU.

It looks to have a nice balance of states, attacks, etc...

What are its upsides?
What are its downsides?

What are your favorite tactics in group PvP?

What are your favorite tactics in solo PvP?

How does if fare in PvE?

Remember, I'm a Master Commando, which basically will make me a better Carbineer using Heavy Weapons, as the only specials I have will be from the Carbineer profession....

WELL, I happen to be a Master of Carbineering, and I think I can answer your questions.

Upsides: All-around good. Very low SAC (72 cap), even lower with a PuP (mine gets down to 51, see sig.) Great damage, 1064 cap (only about 100 less than rifles max.) You can kite very well with it, not as good as with a pistol (but who can kite with a pistol?) and much better than a rifle. Good defenses. One of the best snares in the game, and a good damage knockdown.

Downsides: None, really. I can't think of any downside because Carbines is smack in the middle of pistols and rifles.

Group PvP: Either Full Auto Area or Suppression Fire. FAA is a good damage AoE, while Suppression Fire gives a short (2 sec) snare that's almost as good as a root. (Needs to be spammed to work though.) Although I usually just to /tar tem and go hard with whatever I got if possible.

Solo PvP: I generally knockdown and alternate Critical Shot and Leg Shot a bunch of times (Leg Shot is 1.9x damage modifier.) I also use a lot of BH stuff that's not really Carbineer territory.

PvE: Is great. You can solo Krayt Dragons with Crippling Shot (the snare.) Just apply Snare, knock it down when the snare wears off, reapply. The FAA also allows you to clear out factional NPCs in the time it takes you to eliminate 1 or 2 of them.

Carbineer of course is awesome. What you've hit on however, is a rather deadly an potentially great combo for certain sitautions (aoe) that I've tried before.

Strengths:

Using thePFT or other commando aoe weapon with carbine state specials. Doing this allows you to use area KD and area Snare and apply your burn DOT. As it is right now, the only reason to get commando is to make other profession's specials aoe (stopping shot and concussion shot also immediately come to mind). I think carbine (with the kd and snare) is a good choice for this in that respect, plus at any time you'll be able to whip out a carbine for single shooting with high damage.

Weakness:

In my experience, carbines give me a higher damage output over time than the PFT. For this reason, the flamer is only used in strictly aoe situations. And, unfortunately, when you're using a non-commando weapon you're getting next to no benefit from commando (except for somegeneral stats), which means just about any prof would be more useful at that time.

However, there is talk about making the aoe damage from commando weapons more powerful (asit's borderline broken right now). In that event having carbine's leg shot could result in incredible aoe damage output.

Crippling Shot is immensely effective. AoE crippling shot in PvP would piss off a lot of Jedi. Imagine a squad of MLS/MDef who are trying to chase you around but not quite making it, as they're all snared to hell and being area KDed every 30 seconds.
