Thisis not a flame, this is not a put down of any sort, this is just mycurrent appraisal of the carbineer profession.
First up, yes I'm doing the hologrind, have been working on Carbineer for about 3-4weeks now... I'm almost finished (4434 carbineer) and to be honest this prof. is ok I suppose in pve but in pvp, unless you up against unbuffed novice marksman I really don't see how this is a very useful profession. My current template is tkm/4344medic/4434carbineer in case anyone was wondering.. To be honest where I have found carbines to be useful (in pvp) isif some one is getting away from me on their speeder, I might whip out my carbine and try to toast their speeder so I can catch up to them, (usually I miss btw or I just don't do enough dmg fast enough).
The way I'm looking at this profession is from a comparison point of view, as a TKM when I go up against riflemen I have to be careful regarding where I engage them, how buffed is my mind? how close am I to them when the fight starts etc.. etc.. One bad decision and it will be me taking a trip to the cloning centre. pistoleers an bh's I'm gonna group together, for BH's with there eye shot they can be as deadly as riflemen from range and both pistoleers and BH's can use those new geo pistols that do stun dmg. Yes my armor does have a stun layer but the max you can get is a 33% lair so you still can't just sit there taking hit after hit like you're not noticing it.. Less dangerous than riflmen but still needing caution when engaging them.
Now we come to carbineers. I don't know about others.. but when I'm buffed and wearing full composite, my regen can almost compensate for the dmg carbs do... even if I didn't attack it would take a carbineer 10mins to wear down my ham. Carbineers don't havea head shot so targeting the mind pool directly is out, and as a medic who can use experimented down stim D's, whatever dmg you do to my health or action I can heal back in almost one shot.
Is there a positive you ask? well that area KD is really cool, especially in pve.. it's funny seeing a whole crowd of ppl fall over like dominoes, but in pvp it doesn't work nearly as often and to be honest as a tkm, if I'm buffed and wearing armor, even if I do get knocked over, that's fine... I'm gonna be up in a few seconds at which time maybe my ham has moved a little but you're gonna be in more trouble than I am once I get up.
So, to the experts of the Carbineer forum, Am I doing something wrong? is there some special besides burstshot2 and crippling shot (which is way to slow to be effective btw), that I have overlooked? I thought this profession got fixed in the last patch?
To be honest I don't think I'm going to stay a carbineer very long once I master it in the next day or two, (prob keep it for a week or so just to play around with it). Needless to say this is one pretty gimped up profession you have here. The way I see it TKM does have it's weaknesses but a good fighter can use strategy and the environment around them to minimize those weaknesses.. at least that's what I do. But even under perfect conditions this prof. just doesn't do anywhere near enough dmg to be effective.. unless you are part of a 10 person skirmishing line who are targeting one person at a time and concentrating your fire or something.
Any Ideas?

Carbineers show their full power when grouped, it is not a "solo" profession as the TK can be.

I do not think that carbines suck compared to the other ranged professions. I solo pvp alot as a carbineer and I do very well. I'm just a pure carbineer with some speed tapes but with no additional defenes or any of that **edit**. Sure, meleer profs kill me if they get up close but when it comes to other ranged proffesions I don't really have a problem. Armor and good buffs along with brandy, canape, synthsteak (love that stuff) and the occasional muon and even riflemen with their jawas have a hard time draining away my mind.
I do not mind fights take 10mins or more, infact I like those kinds of fights more than just the 10s then incap ones. One of the best fights I've ever had was against a rifleman/TKA outside AH, at first he took of 1/3 of my mind and I retreated abit to take another brandy, synthsteak and canape. When he caught up with me I had nearly 3k mind and started adding states to him, when he was blinded he barely hit me at all and I got him dizzuy/kd maybe 3-4 times but he just got up and healed. No problem with that, just extends the fun abit so I spammed scattershot2 abit and he started running but in the end I got him. Was a great fight and I hope he had as much fun as I had.
The thing is, if you want to be effective in solo pvp then you need to either go Master Carbineer with some BH carbine skills or buy +25 in speed tapes. Add a few good carbines to that and you're set to go. I know you don't have to spend as much money or skillpoints to reach an equal level of power with rifles but if you want to be competitive with carbines you should be prepared to spend alot of money.

Get a decent Carbine and use your state attacksmore, that's what I do and I do ok in PvP.My Elite is pretty normal but using the right tactics i can get a nice amount of damage out of it and I don't die half as much as I expected to when I started this prof (pre-publish 7).
I prefer PvE though tbh as I'm finding Carbineer/CH/Scout to be quite a useful little combo for most PvE.

I agree with you. Carbine's really suck. I am a Hologrinder myself. I would not be doing this, but the little blue cube told me to. The first one said Commando, and the second Carbineer.
Commando is soooooooooo much better at killing. I do admit that I am still a Carbineer NOOB. I am only 1/1/0/1. But it takes me forever to kill something, even spamming specials.
I can't survive even the medium sized creatures if I am not Buffed. I am using a Slug Thrower, sliced for speed. But the special costs are enormous if you are not Buffed. I can spam specials on my Flamethrower and not get incapped. This is odd to me. But since I am listening to the cubes, I have to go through it. But I don't have to like it
