hi
i have a master rifleman master ch on intrepid and have been that way fro a very long time. i like it so much that i dont wan t to change the character so i made a new one on eclipse.
my eclipse toon is going fencer + ranged, which i would like to be either carbineer or pistoleer.
question is, which one is better for PvE and PvP ?
are they any good ?
what are the overall strengths and weaknesses of the carbineer ?
thanks

Fencer/Pistoleer = Better Defense. Crappy ranged attack, unless youve got a sweet Geno or Prepatch Krayt pistol.
Fencer/Carbineer = Good Defense. Good ranged. Good Tank. <<<< Overall Winner In My Opinion!
Also try putting in some Tka or Swords to make a even better tank.

Pistoleer has great dodge to go with fencer. For PvP i'd chose pistoleer IF you can get a good Geo gun, if not carbineer might be better for PvP.

I'm probably not the best person to answer this question. I was never a master pistoleer (0400, 0040, and 3000 at different times), and have no intention of mastering carbineer (due to SP, I'm planning on 4000 or 0004, I can't decide). I have also not really done any other combat classes. And between the two, if all you want to know is which is "better", given issues with stun damage, HAM costs, and many other reasons, pistoleer is better.
However, my take is that carbineer are not *the best* combat class. However, they are definitely one of the most *fun* combat classes, and still worth doing.
When I was pistoleer, it seems like I spent all my time spamming healthshot2. (I'm also a combat medic, so targeted damage is the way I go.) Every time I got a new special, I was excited for a few minutes, until I found out that disarmingshot, bodyshot3, stoppingshot, and pretty much every other special wasn't as good as an attack I got at novice pistoleer. (And before the patch, that wasn't as good as bodyshot2, which I got in the marksman skill tree.)
As a carbineer, so far all of my specials have a use. (Fullautosingle to get a blind or a dizzy effect, actionshot for posturedown or area damage, legshot for raw damage, etc.) Every time I get a new special, I'm excited to try it out. More surprising, after trying it out, it finds its way onto my toolbar, and I can't imagine playing without it anymore (keeping in mind I still use my old attacks too.) And we get an area attack at novice level (which is very important for me, as an area poison can get a group of people to one action point).
It's quite fun to take a shot at a creature at 64m, posture down attack it, attack a few more times, hit it with a knockdown, and continue to attack it while it is desperately trying to get into melee range.
(Not to mention that when getting my weapons sliced, I'm not especially crushed when I get a "worthless" speed slice like with pistols. In fact, I prefer them.)
Then again, this is just my take on it. And, as a master combat medic who does 99% PvE (among other oddities of how I play star wars galaxies), my take on something is probably different than most peoples.

Currently without questions the better combinations is definately Pistoleer/Fencer. Stacking dodge mods is an uber-PvP techinque. However you should also consider taking dirty fighting 4 to make use of low-blow, last ditch and panic shot (amazingly good PvP specials).
However since you already have a combat class on another server, why don't you make an artisan type for this one?

For PvP Pistoleer Fencer is the way to go, mainly because of the Dodge you get. If you can throw some smuggler, the dirty fighting tree, this also will help. If you like carbines, like I do, I suggest going with cabineer, pikeman.

Now I may be wrong here, but wasnt therea fix to prevent the stacking of the defensive bonuses? In otherwords, you only get the bonus for the weapon you have equipped.
I heard this somewhere and wanted to see whether I was out in cookoo land.
