I disagree, Ionscout. I envision pistoleers as being the defensive of the ranged professions, and carbineers being the special effects wizards. If carbineers had a "good, working defense" (read: counter attack was as good, or better, than dodge), it wouldn't be fair. There would be very little reason to be a pistoleer, as a carbineer would be as defensive, but also get a plethora of specials that pistoleers don't have.

I think that carbineers should *not* be as effective as pistoleers in defense, and I think most carbineers would agree with this. We don't want to be able to do everything. We want everybody to be able to do some things very well, but all to have huge weaknesses in other things. We don't want to be uber and to be able to do everything, we want us (and everybody else) to be distinct and balanced.

I'm hoping that counter attack will change to provide no defensive abilities, but allow you to fire your next attack instantly (bypassing the 1 second speed cap). This would very much be in line with both the name, and the idea that carbineers are good at crowd control (as more opponents = more counter attacks = more area attacks affectingthe opponentgroup). We'll see if that ever happens though, and what the fallout of such a change would be...

I may be lost here, but I don't see any opinions being stated by Ionscout to be disagreed upon. They are just asking questions.

I was disagreeing with the statement that it was a "bummer" that counterattack was worse than dodge.

I did swordsman, and I currently have +75 counterattack from that profession (I left the one skill tree because I knew I was going to do carbineer in the near future). I haven't counterattacked once.

Do I need novice carbineer for that (3k away from it, just fell asleep last night lol), or is it "working as intended"?

Counterattack does work, just at a lower rate (without /center) than Dodge/Block. And it varies greatly on the level of mob you fight....

Oh, well I thought everybody knew that bug, SORRY....it works just like Dodge/Block in that regard, just not often enough.

And my unproven theory says Dodge/Block cost an attack turn whereas Counterattack doesn't.....which if that is true would be the counter attack you speak of.....but I haven't gotten around to testing it yet.

I was just asking,sheesh....Dont need to get upset...

It's funny you mention that, heh. Just yesterday, a Pikeman friend of mine dueled a Swordsman (the latter is a MHS and had CoB on) and the Pikeman couldn't hit him, heh. Even with maxed out Accuracy SEAs.

It was rather funny. The Swordsman was still standing still, having never gone into an "attack stance" because he had been counter-attacking every single Pikeman move.

So either Pikeman is really worse off than it should be.. or Counterattack works as intended for them.. and you were just really unlucky.

On that note....

I made Master Carbineer the other night.

So I decided to try PvP this evening.

Now, ignoring everything else (like being lagged to death, and so forth), I think Counterattack kicked in frequently enough.

Assuming I'm reading the combat logs correctly, I was shot 13 times total. Counterattack blocked 3 of them.

I'm not sure that I am, becase a lot of the shots are paired, and my armour reduction only seems to apply once.

But still, circa 25% 'negates an attack' ability isn't exactly *bad*.......

Firehawk, I think that is just an animation issue you are speaking of. The dodge animation is few seconds long and so it looks like you stop firing.
