Regarding the speed vs defense issues.
There are currently test from the player base that indicate that speed in not properly working.
In case it is not working, you dont have to worry about speed, since it will do nothing (or not enough) but better go for defense, but ...
... in case it is working or when they will fix it, speed will be something you want to consider when building your template.
For test, pls keep an eye out for TAfirehawks treads.

Oh, and only being level 78 shouldn't be a big deal. That's still high enough that there's not much difference.

the CL depends on what you want to do with your character. If your going for PvP, 2 CL means about 30 hp, and no problem what so ever.
if your going for a PvE style, 2 levels against something like a lvl 81 thing will make a big difference.
As for the BE clothing mods (im restating b/c i dont think you got it)
Even though your clothes' mods add up to +53, the 'cap' is +25, so you wont actually get any more out of that extra +18 you have. Generally i like a Healing Eff +18 shirt, and a Ranged/melee defense +16 bandolier with AA's for the rest.
this 'cap' applies to all non-skill-box granted items, so if one of your weapons has a +10 rifle accuracy on it, you only need +15 rifle accuracy in AA's/CA's

I like it, especially because it is something different. However, I'd change it up just a tad, go to 0003 Pistols, only get 0400 in medic, and get yourself another full line in CM, either x4xx or xxx4. My reasoning: you will still have stopping shot, what you probably wanted from that line. The xx3x you lose in med will not matter much, I am only med 0400/CM 4000 and can heal 1000ish all the time, plenty for me without clothing. If you get 4004 CM, you get the best snare in the game, both most effective and the longest. If you get 4400 or 4040 you get a decent DoT. Finally, this will bump you up to level 80. Just my thoughts though, but I am interested in how this works out for you.
Also, what do you do mostly, PvP, PvE, grouping, soloing, big game hunting?

Forget about Rifles. Master Pistoleer instead. You getsimilargeneral mods as well as some great abilities (Advanced Stopping shot, Disarming shot, Warning shot
. You can still use an advanced laser rifle with some degree of effectiveness. Master Pistols gets you certified for the Trandoshan Pistol that is an easy quest reward on Kashyyk (energy damage::120 electric damage::358 min) and then there's the Kashyyk Pistol which doesn't require Master Pistoleer, but it does work better if you have the skills (Kinetic damage::75 acid::537 min damage:
.And you'll get the magical CL 80.
Also if you run it this way you'll have the points left over to pick up electrolite drain and thyroid rupture from the cm bio warfare line which can be very usefull. In fact if you are willing to use citrus snow cake, healing food and a med bot you could drop the healing eff line and go for the full bio warfare line and then you'd have a paralize too.
Anyway, if you ask me, mastering pistols will be much more effecive than dabbling in both pistols and rifles and given the choice between stacking your carbines with rifles or pistols, I'd go for the pistols for the versatility.

i took a look at a prof calc i have, and drakenya i took ur qadvice in dropping from pistols xxx4 to xxx3 and picking up another lin in CM here is the revised template: Master Carbineer/ Rifleman 44xx (for snipershot as well as def)/ pistols xxx3 (def and stopping shot, as well as fan shot for crowd control)/ and CM 4xx4. and to answer your question about what im interested in doing just about all of that. i had master carbs, pistols xxx4 and BH x444 and i soloed a kimo. i definately want to do that a lot more. i also want to get more involved in PvP. But my guild also does A LOT of group hunting and stuff like that. then again there is also the fact that i wanna be able to do a little bit of everything you said. baisically i want a versatile template lol. i hope this does it. with a ranged defense of 230, i think ill be able to hold my own, and with a nice nyms, i think i can dish it out too. so thanks everyone for the help. i would also like any more advise

thanks drakenya lol i asked about sniper shot on the rifles forums, and havent gotten an answer yet so u just gave it to me. im glad i went for carbs lol

For soloing kimos and such, you should do fine. All you really need are a semi-light gun (the carbine) so you can run a bit, a nice root (electro drain works great, but the carb one will do), the root will help you in a jam if you need it, and so will the knockdown, and the heals will keep you alive.
To the poster that said drop rifles, my ideas are to keep it, especially for PvE and soloing. With the x4xx line, you get cover/conceal that enables you to pull single mobs from gruops once you learn it, and the headshot of 4xxx does a bit more damage than the bodyshot of 4xxx pistols. Finally, sniper shot is well worth it in the right situations.
