Have on the outside walls of starports, scolling billboards, that will allow crafters to advertise, could even allow politicans to place on the billboard for people to live in a city.
Toss in some imperial recruiting phrases, some rebel transmission interruptions. Maybe even some holonews of live events as they take place.

Yeah, devs were thinking of an ingame message boards of sorts a while ago.
Any form of a "billboard" or message board (that can be accessed easier than the planet chat or auction chat) might very well help reduce spam. Not totally kill it mind you, as people would still have to try and get the interest of customers or potential guildmates.
A system of this however would help tremendously with crafters, and of course promotional events for guilds and whatnot. As all the information is concentrated in one area where you can browse through.

That sounds like a great idea! But just a few add-ons that I was thinking of...
Wouldn't the starports get really crowded from artisans and politicians ALL wanting to advertise their wares/city in this hott new way? So here's what I was thinking to go along with what you said:
* You must be a Master Politician to be able to advertise your city.
* You must be either Master Artisan or a Master Elite Profession (Droid Engineer, Chef, etc) to advertise your wares
* Down payment of, like, 2,000 cr to post, and for each day it runs then you pay an additional 750.
* Limit the days running to 5, so other people have a chance.
* Make it like housing is in other games: only a certain number of billboards. That way, when a new one is 'opened up' everyone is eager to go for it.
Just my two cents.

Kewl idea and it would definitely bring a new aspect of interest. Afterall you could either stop and watch the billboard or just ignore it. Best advantage is reduction in the /addignore list holding allthe spammers thatencounter now. Of coursepeople ignored the Auction channel and still spam some areas so I am sure that some would ignore this option as well.

only problem i see is different msgs that get put up there, eg about different guilds etc, so if they do it, the CSRs need to keep people inline so they don't use it for other then advertising there company/city

hmmm...maybe a filter tied into registered guilds, that will not let you post any names of any guilds.

Have the messages tailored to specific classes. Ranged, Brawler, Merchant, Doctor, etc... What you see will depend on what class you are. If you have more than one class (who doesn't) let it be random between them. Allow the people posting the ads to post 1 ad that is aimed at no more than 2 classes (changeable once in a 24hr period). This should allow everybody a chance at getting an ad to the selected target. 900 per day for a basic ad. 9000 per day for a delux holographic animated ad. The price should deter 'crap' from being advertised as often. Let the master merchants get a discount of course. Or maybe have the price dependent upon the character count.
For Player cities, have an election billboard for election stuff and one optional billboard ad for its citizens. Price for the city billboard ad should be made by its mayor. Election billboard should be free, but have a list of phrases that a canidate can choose (don't need ads or bashin on the electiom billboards)
