Thread: Space Mining resources not for normal crafting?!

MMORPG.com: How will the asteroid mining work? What impact will it have on the existing player economy?

Dallas: Space Mining will be revealed and taught to players through a series of quests. The gameplay itself is simple enough: find an asteroid, blast the heck out of it, and gather the resources that fly off. We are shooting for a really fun, simple arcade experience here. At higher levels (in higher level space zones), you’ll start to see Mining Pirates show up to compete with you for the resources – so you’d better be prepared for some dogfighting. The resources you get can either be traded in for fast cash at mining stations around the galaxy or converted into special crafting resources that you can only get in space. These resources will not replace any existing resources, but there will be specific schematics and recipes that require you to have space resources to make.

I was assuming/hoping that space mining would provide an additional source of resources normally used in crafting. Guess not!

This is disappointing. Finding specific, namedresourcetypesused in various "Advanced" crafting components is a waiting game of many, many months and the opportunity is all too brief (usually gone one week). I had hoped that space mining might allow an active method (versus the passive harvester method) of hunting and gathering some additional resources. Oh well...

How is this not crafting. The point is you will not be betting the same resources in space as you get on the ground and there will be new stuff to craft that uses these resources. This seems a better solution than getting the same booring minerals etc from space.

I read this to mean that resources from space won't be usable in any existing schematics like T-21 rifles or ship chassis or house deeds. Instead, the only thing they'll be good for is new looted schematics like new kinds of Bubble Tanks, banners, and Gaming Tables. In other words, nothing really useful.

I'm hoping it will be used to make special items. Something like how RIS is made right now.

Yeah.. like the new ship chassis, and probably a number of other useful objects.

Right. The thinking is most likely that this would allow unfair competition between those whobought theJtL and RotW expansion packs (and thus have access to more resource types) and those who haven't.

I personally don't think this is a significant problem -- if anything, it's an inducement to people to earn some money and buy the expansions! But the developers probably don't want to hear the complaining.

Why looted? It wouldn't be at all surprising to see new craftable schematics as part of RotW, just as JtL offered new schematics such as ships and ship parts.

In other words, nothing really useful.

Well, I guess we'll just have to see about that. For now, I don't see any reason why we should assume that new schematics will be worthless.

Bring on Space Mining!

Perhaps if they ever get around to make space stations available, that these space resources will be required then. SWG is supposed to be playable even if you don't buy any expansion or JTL.

It sounds like it could also be new resource categories. So maybe a new type of "Flobotanum Iron" that can only be mined in space. Some new schematics may require Flobotanum in the same way that a T21 requires Polonium Iron, or Flobotanum can be used in any schematics that require just "Iron" or "Ferrous Metal".

Really, we'll have to wait and see. Personally, I'm not expecting these to be a major source of resources, since it doesn't appear to allow for any automated harvesting. If you have to hand-gather resources with your ship, you're probably going to want to stick to crafting items that need that particular resourcetype, you won't waste it on a swoop bike.

I agree with SciGuyCO. It looks to me like there'll be resources available this way that are still in the Ore catagory, but not Silicastic or Carbonate or whatever.... Instead it'll be something else. I'll be interested to see how the quality is determined.

Although, it's also possible it'll be like the FS resources... I hope not.

It's all gone. And so am I.
