OK so everyone is going on about bazaar this merchant thatbut whether or not you are a merchant the system demands change... my idea will bring bazaars back into mainstream for everyone, not just non-merchants.
Step 1 - Bazaar layout
the current layout for the whole vendor/bazaar needs to be fixed. The categories need to be re-organized for some professions, doctors especially. Each vendor listing needs to be ordered by professions, so anyone who doesn't have their own category needs one. IE doctors (Medical Supplies), chefs (food and drink), and others i'm sure but i'm not logged in right now to give a fair assessment of everyone. Next, there should be a checkbox for "Include Factory Crated Items in List" so that way when we search for things we have the option to see the crates or not, rather than just throwing all crates in a "Sub-Misc" list.
Step 2 - Search Results
2 options for search results ... the current layout, which is good. IE 100 items per page, next button, sort by name/price/etc. however if we have increased usage of the bazaars, we're going to want to include: "Sort By User" will be added as an option, so when you search for something there's a separate page or box that will let you see what users match your request. example "John has 20 matches and 2 vendors that match your request" (we'll get to that shortly) you'll be able to click on "John" and see what he has. LikeI said, you'll be able to see anyone has any matching VENDORS for your request...
the way it works is like this, this works by REGION only. you can only have up to 3 vendors total put this way, you get 1 at business 4, advertising 1, and advertising 3. you will also be able to put up a waypoint and a short description of said vendor. you would do this by going to the region bazaar terminal that you would like your vendor to show up in, click a new section for "Advertising" and select the vendor(s) that you would like included searches.
Step 3 - Price cap
The price cap needs to be removed or raise. many merchants will say this isn't fair but in a realistic economy there isn't a price limit. My idea, up the price cap to 25k for instant sales. This will allow for many more things to be sold on the vendor. As far as auctions go, they can start at any number, but once they pass a certain point, say the instant sale cap, they will no longer be able to be removed by the seller from the bazaar. These items have to stay on the bazaar MINIMUM 3 days for the actual sale to complete (so you can't actually sell it for 3 days, whether or not the cap was reached).
those are my ideas... it brings together a few of em out there, hope ya like it

Factory crates shouldn't have there own categorie, they should appear in the subcategorie of the item which is crated.
Let me say once again... we have an outgame 'ebay' (trade forums) why can't we have it in-game open for everyone. If the merchants feel that
there benefits ain't so good any longer, then don't hesitate and give it up... free some skill-points and grab skills that serve you more ...
I think the only merchants that are complaining are the ones that have multiple accounts... i personally decided that its a waste of money to purchase
another account to be able to sell my goods in-game .. i will stick on the trade forums and spam at starports, which cost a little more online time and
organization, but saves me lots of skill-points and i usually getting a better price and selling it faster this way then a vendor in any of the player cities.
I agree, if you are a crafter you need merchant, because you make your money over mass sells ... but if you are a looter and only selling really good stuff
you dunno really need a merchant, cause the amount of items won't be so high.

That part of the Bazaar has ALWAYS made me wonder - What in game mechanic makes it that a Crate of any good is defined as just a crate? It SHOULD leaves like items with like items, whether it be individual or crated.

Ah, but instead of eliminating an in game profession, why not just eliminate the Out of game work around? Merchants as defined in game aren't exactly the way they should be. To be a true Merchant class, they should have the ability to effectively do what Merchants do - IE buy goods at a lower cost en masse, and resell for a profit. - And the ability to sell on consignment, etc.

You are very correct here - Why spend more on an additional account when you can mimick the abilities of Merchants both in and OUT of the game? But, what if the Trade Forums and Recursive spamming didn't exist? Would you still be as willing to be at your keyboard spamming a starport, reaching only a limited amount of players? Would you be willing to spend the time doing this, knowing a simple /addignore forcefully removes your spam from being seen, leaving you WITHOUT the ability to make sales? Because indeed, most people I know simply /addignore spammers out of hand, no matter the items they are selling.
You see, if they remove your ability to make sales this way, you would be crying foul - Just like Merchants in game are crying Foul at the very thought of taking away our unique abilities and handing them to everyone freely.

I agree with you. The Bazaar shouldn't be AS restrictive as it currently stands - but is also shouldn't become a free for all. An amount of moderation needs to exist.

decimate were u even paying attention?
i just said that food, drink, pharmaceuticals, need main categories and more subcategories. there are about 50 kinds of pharmaceuticals that fit into about 7+ categories
as far as the original post goes, i'm not taking ANYTHING away from merchants, if anything i'm giving them stuff
