Thread: Proposal for New Structure Ranch, and Economic and Game Benefits

I'm sorry Slim, maybe I missed it, but while you're stating the obvious I don't see you responding to the price elasticity benefit that the ranch structure would add in value to the existing economy, the existing economy which you have just summed up in a nutshell. Here it is repeated for you, for your review and comment:

It may very well be that most hunters simply have a little scout so they can supplement their incomes by selling creature resources, especially when a good spawn comes along. However, that really is besides the point. The scout's/ranger's economic role is to provide creature resources. Just as it's the economic role of crafters to provide finished goods, and for combat toons to bring money into the economy by doing combat missions. Allowing anyone to place a "ranch" harvestor would diminish that econimic role, just as it would by allowing anyone to make weapons or anyone to buff themselves without spending the skillpoints for the appropriate professions.

The term I was looking for was "price elasticity."
So if it helps to look at it from a different perspective, the effect to the economy is that players have an opportunity to drop out of a price war at various individual price points, at each consumers' choosing, such that overall, there is an effect to the economy by introducing that choice/option.
"I, as an individual, who might have previously paid 200 to 400cpu for this creature resource to acquire 200k units, now have 63k units of this spawn by ranching, and I'm willing to purchase from hunters additional amounts if the price does not go above _______." That amount is up to the individual, and is influenced bytheir need, the amount ranched, the amount of credits available, and competing uses for those credits.
If scouts/rangers can place a "ranch" harvestor, they can collect more of a given resource than they can collecting by hand. If supply increases without a corresponding increase in demand, prices must drop. This is Economics 101. Therefore, the available supply of creature resources still increases (even if not as much as if everyone could use "ranches"), and prices still drop (even if they don't quite drop to the range of harvested minerals). And there is nothing stopping a Doc, Chef, BE or AS from dabbling in novice scout to be able to place their own ranches, thus completely circumventing thetraditional supply chain and reducing their effective costs to around 0.5 cpu--in other words they can complete drop out of the "price wars" you mention above by simply not hiring any scouts/rangers at all.

Thanks for the info, I'll check it out.

the above thread has been worked on in the ch forum for a very long time. all intersted in the ranch should check this out.
there have been a few versions and has a few other areas we were planning on breaking down to different areas.all the info ch community has volunteered here was and still is to enrich all professions and not take anything away from any other profession, even ranger,s/be's have been considered in our quest for a coral
Hope this helps

Game needs work, ladies and gentlemen. Game needs TLC. People leaving game. Game in trouble. Devs so uptight about future of game they hire 20 people to breathe life into it. Can you read between the lines? Can't blame everything on SOE, peeps need to be constructive here and be cool with each other, raise the bar on helping the game survive.
Let's treat each other with a little respect. Rather than trash an idea because you don't understand it, how about taking a moment to try to understand it? Or, if you don't care either way enough to stop to give it consideration, move along and find one that you can be constructive with.
I'm reading alot of these replies and thinking, "they don't understand, they're not trying to understand." I'm reading alot of these replies and saying, "they don't get it."
It's a good idea that would have good impact on the game, for good reasons. It's funny that some people don't take the time to see what someone else is saying, or to challenge what they dont understand, to gain more understanding. Rather than view something from a narrow perspective, at least start out by saying, "this person is trying to accomplish something, what is it? This person thinks this is a good idea, why do they think that?" When you can say, "ah I see what they're saying, but I'm still concerned by this consequence or that, and I don't see that covered or addressed," then fine, say that...
Communication lessons over.
The idea has merit, and has a lot of pro's, and does not eliminate the scout profession. It just balances it out. It helps balance out hyper economies and too many zero's in prices. There's merit here. Look for it, and challenge it reasonably.

The funny thing is your idea does not have merit and would lead to the destruction of a profession that I have been a master of since december 2003 (Ranger). I love the ranger profession but the implementation of this idea would take away the one useful skill that I still have. Looking for ways to make your in game life easier is short sighted as it doesn't address the fact that 2 professions would be destroyed and the organics market would be flooded beyond recovery. Trust me whenIsaythat rangers and scouts do not set the prices on organics, every hunt thatI have gone on for profit has been as a direct result of seeing someones post on the trade forums, an in game email or a friends need. I have only dictated the price once to someone who wanted to buy a stack of 125k stack of carnivore meat to grind bio-engineer, i had it just taking up inv. space so I sold it to him for 3cpu, but enough about me. If you truly want feedback on this subject take it to my favorite board of all time and post there, The Ranger Board. This topic has been mentioned for at least the past year and it seems that someone keeps dragging it out of its proverbial grave, after its been dead and buried for some time.
Bottom line it's not gonna happen, but go ahead and post it on the Ranger Board.
