Thread: THERE IS NO INFLATION!!
It's not really the specific numbers in theinitial postthat matter -- it's the point being made throughout this thread that the numbers never have backed upconcerns about "inflation."
Might be useful for folks who are concerned about this (as I was at one time)to see this thread stickied....

milgram has made numerous insightful posts about the economy and i think he should get his own stickied thread that has links to all those economic threads from him inside

This isn't the threat to be stickied though.
If there's a misconceptionyou think has come up as often as this one, and that has a good thread (like this one)debunking it, please suggest it for stickyhood, too.

Oh I meant there are better threads to be stickied other than this one.

Like which ones?
Here is another post that is better to sticky. This one is by RelicOMO.
No offense to Milgram, but Phaelyn and RelicOMO have done some excellent posting on the subject of the economy. I can't find or remember the specific one that Phaelyn did that I liked unfortunately.

I would have no problems with RelicOMO's post (and subsequent thread) being stickied. It was well-written and sensible. Anyone who is seriously interested in how the SWG economy works would benefit from reading it.
But I disagree that it's a better choice for explaining that there's no inflation in SWG.It's not direct enough.
The people who don't understand what the word "inflation" means (but who come here to complain about it anyway)won't learn from RelicOMO's post. If they even bother readingthe threadbased on the subject line, most of them will have tuned out long before they ever hit the final paragraph of the initial post.
In terms of specifically talking about inflation, thisthread is better. Inthe first place, it starts witha subject lineof "THERE IS NO INFLATION!!". That's pretty direct, which is exactly what's needed.
In the second place, it gets to the point immediately. The argument is a little dated, but not that dated; a reasonable mix of goods aren't consistently selling for more than they used to -- i.e., no inflation.
Is this a perfect way to explain to regular folks that inflation isn't something to worry about in SWG? No. It could be shorter and more direct on the subject. It could use better examples (a more representative "market basket" of goods). It could have fewer spelling errors. If you know of another message that accomplishes allthis, I'll happily endorse stickying it instead of this one.
Until then, this one's pretty good. It addresses the specific goal of rebutting the claim of inflation, and itdoes so inthe reasonably eye-catching,clear and specificway that's needed.
Perfect? No. Good enough? Yes... especially considering that we have nothing currently. Let's not wait until the perfect rebuttal to claims of inflation comes along; let's get something stickied now.

I'm still working on a FAQ for this board, it's become a major task. I plan on having a full section devoted to inflation, and I will be stealing from this thread and several others, in addition to some of my own homework. If anyone has suggestions as to what they think should go into it, let me know.

Pricing schemes and why prices on one server don't affect prices on every server. Oh yes, address the credit dupes. Some people seem to believe that all those credits are still floating around, destroying the economy.
oh goodness, the 'SWG philosopher' is @ it again. lol
i do agree, no inflation..just complete and subtle case of.......'complete market chaos' ![]()

Ah -- I was wondering if a FAQ was still in the works. Excellent!
Some random suggestions for sections or resources:
- Description of "faucet/drain" economies
- Similarities and differences between SWG and real-world economies
- SWG as a "pure competition" economy
- Galaxy-Wide Vendor Search ("perfect knowledge" increases price competition)
- Links to Merchant stickies on rules for using vendors
- How the de facto "Miner profession" works
- The impact of admin rights to harvesters
- The impact of cross-server lot trading
- Tools for business: vendors, barker droids, PAs, the auction channel, etc.
Note that some of these subjects have been controversial in the past... but that's why it would be helpful to have them mentioned in a FAQ. That way people can learn quickly which subjects have been touchy so they don't inadvertently throw gasoline back on a fire.
(An alternative might be to simply have a section thatlists the subjects considered tohave beencontroversial, but not to discuss them in the FAQ. This would let people know which subjects have produced heated debates without actually restarting them through FAQ commentary.)
Finally, please consider that a FAQ doesn't have to try to supply an answer every possible question -- sometimes the best thing is just to provide links torepresentative threads and let people form their own conclusions.
Hope to see a first cut at this FAQ soon, and thanks for taking on this task!
