I just started chopping away with an axe

Heavy Axe is the only starting weapon for 2-Handed. Once you get Intermediate 2-Handed, you can use the (oddly enough) Two Handed Axe. I believe there's another one here, too. Look at each block in the 2-Handed tree and you'll see what level gives you what weapon certification.
