It depends on what you're going to do, and what you like to do really. I enjoy PvE, since I can't PvP (Computer/lag issues, not class) so my build is something like this.
Master heavy swordsman, master creature handler, TKA (4/0/0/0), medic (0/1/0/0)
I don't know why people combine melee and comando. They don't compliment each other at all. Commando is short range and melee is... short range heh. Besides, if you go this path you are better off going tkm instead of swordsman since commando requires unarmed 4 anyway.

Not a bad combination except you would want to go tkm instead of master swordsman snice smuggler requires unarmed 4. This is a good mix of ranged power and melee power and with tkm you can heal the wounds you take while feigning death (i hear you take a lot of wounds if things beat on you heh).

Ch is very common with melee professions because unless you have top of the line equipment and are pretty far in the profession, you can't tank. Sadly, monsters will soon go right for the player hitting them behind the pet if they don't already now (stealth nerfs ugh!). Oh and i would just look at ch web sites instead of wasting the points on master scout.
You also mightwant to think about master melee profession (if you are a power gamer go tkm and ignore the fact there are 4 melee professions), master doctor(or 0/4/4/0 for just good buffs/revives and super stimpacks) and exploration 1.
most people think this combo is awkward, but i love it. both of my combat classes have huge ham costs, but it really doesnt matter since i buff myself and can heal my action and health in 1 stim, and if they are buffed then 2.
as a swordsman/docotr i rule in pve, buff/moun gold(sometimes not)/ powerhammer for the mind bleed, swords for the mind whackin'.
i mainly picked up carbineer for pvp, and thank god i did. come by an imp, we start firing at each other (whats funny is that in most all the gun fights ive been in ppl just run around in circles, so i follow suit), i spam full auto single 2 a few times, start to close in, charge shot (ranged knockdown), mind bleed, head hit.
but atm with the additional 75% damage reduction, i dont do the full auto's, and instead of the head hit 3 after the mind bleed, i do another mindbleed.
but the damage reduction is a bug, so ill go back to my old ways soon enough, for the better or the worse.
o and i go around with my title as either novice carbineer, stimpack chemist, or novice scout, and carry my laser carbine at all times,
