Is having a high Melee/Ranged defense good? If so, why?

I don't think anyone but the devs knows what it actually does. Anyone know the mechanics?

Does it subtract from the opponents to hit or is it like a dodge bonus?

if its anything like unarmed toughness then it gives 1% per point of damage reduction (or something like that)

although i dont know how to test it.

Yes high melee/ranged defense is good, the higher the less your opponents chances are of hitting you, or so it's believed.

It's opposite value than accuracy. Basically accuracy- melee/ranged defence (+-moving/posture etc) = hit chance. There might be more complex formula but it follows it about like that...
