Thread: Melee Defense??

Does Melee Defense stack with other Tree Melee D modifiers? I keep hearing YES and NO, whats the correct answer?

Melee Defense and Ranged Defense mods stack. The melee defense you get from TKA, for example,stacks with the melee defense you get from every other profession.


Different Melee toughness types does not. For example, unarmed toughness doesn't stack with polearm toughness.

Master Medic

Hey all I'm a Master Rifleman/TKM and I used to be able to do savage quneker missions without a problem. Then I noticed today while I'm trying to grind out master brawler i'm getting hit a lot more...


If I'm wearing my VK's I take 66 damage


Holding a Laser Rifle I take130 damage


Holding a knife I take 167 damage


I get hit more often when I am holding a knife and least when I have my VK's equiped. Does this mean that even though I have +104 to melee defense it no longer means anything and that the defense don't work across professions and are specific to what weapon you are currently holding? I have a feeling that the DEVS made it so your defensive bonuses work specifically for the weapon you are holding. This is what I have noticed, can anyone confirm?

Not exactly true. I'm rifleman only and noticed those savage quenkers take me out in no time now, where before I could just about ignore them. They did some correction on rifleman and melee defense so we get hit a lot more often, but not for more damage. The reduction in TKA is due to unarmed toughness which only worked when unarmed or with VKs since the beginning.

gah... lol melee def doesnt affect how much you get hurt.. thats toughness... melee def is how much you actually get hit

I don't think passive defenses are weapon specific: it's just that since the patch we've taken a BIG hit to our defense modifiers while holding a ranged weapon, which is how it was supposed to be since they dropped the 2.5x modifier.

I have noticed that since I picked up all the extra melee defense from rifleman, I get hit a lot less when I'm fighting melee, so that's kind of cool.

Dont forget your unarmed toughness skill and Melee mitigations... This is why you are taking less damage.
The 2.5X bonus to your melee defense is gone now and you should be getting hit much more (as of publish 7)

Yep, we do get hit more now and I considerRifleman a more balanced profession for it. We should not be the Tanks, we are the brains!!!

Toughness is specific to your weapon, that is why you are taking lower damage holding VKs, you have 57+ unarmed toughness, whereas you likely have 0 1-handed toughness. You take 57% less dmg with the VKs. Melee defense is not specific and only determines how often you get hit and rifles have a to-hit melee bonus applied against them.

Unarmed toughness reduces your melee damage explaining why you take little damage with VK's.


If you were using flushing shot, the stun effect reduces damage taken also so that possibly explains why you were taking more damage with a knife.
