It's very common to wonder how various combat mechanics supposedly work. This FAQ will serve as part of a list of FAQ's discussing various game mechanics and how they are thought to work and (for some) how they are intended to work. These two things are not always the same mind you. These mechanics can change and they are not always understood perfectly. If you have reason to doubt any of these FAQ's please let me know asap.

In this thread we'll be talking about weapon accuracy. The best available weapon accuracy testing comes from a post HERE, written by Noules000. It is consistent with my experiences and has not been successfully challenged to my knowledge.

The basic formula is:

chance_to_hit = 66% + (attacker_accuracy - defender_defense + ranged_mod) / 2 + situational_modifiers

situational_modifiers refers to the posture of the attacker and defender, bonuses from using a special,and any other modifiers.

To see what this means in short, we can ignore the ranged mods and situational modifiers. Basically you should have a 66% chance of hitting a target that has the same defense as your accuracy. As your accuracy climbs, the you will tend towards hitting 100% of the time.

Note that this does not include consideration of passive defenses such as dodge, block, coutnerattack and defensive acuity. It is thought that these factor in after hit determination. If you were to actuallychart the number of hits you take it would be lower than that indicated by this formula due to these other defenses. If the stacking of these defenses is correctly understood then your overall chance to be hit should be:

chance_to_be_hit = attackers_chance_to_hit * (1 - chance_to_dodge)

where chance_to_dodge could be a chance to dodge, block or counterattack depending on the weapon you use.

In practice this means that a lot of professions will tend to hit most of the time (disregarding dodge/block/counter for the moment).If this formula is correct then, neglecting ranged mods and situational modifiers,Teras Kasi Master have a +205 accuracy modifier and it would take a 136 melee defense to drop their chance of hitting below 100%. Other professions have lower accuracies (some as low as +110 or so) and should still be useful in part, but you will tend to need a lot of them to see a large difference.

--- this is a rough draft and I may add more discussion here later ---
